About Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers Beach is a town of 5,582 people (2020 census) spread along Estero Island, a barrier island about 11 kilometers (7 miles) long on the Gulf side of Lee County. Downtown Fort Myers lies roughly 24 kilometers (15 miles) to the northeast. People lived on the island long before the town existed, as the Calusa shell mound under the Mound House shows, but Fort Myers Beach only incorporated on December 31, 1995. There are 29 public beach accesses along the island, so almost the whole Gulf shoreline can be reached on foot.

Pink Shell sits at 275 Estero Boulevard, near Bowditch Point Park at the island’s northern tip, with Matanzas Pass on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It began as a single cottage built in 1950 and has grown into a 12-acre (4.9-hectare) beach resort and marina with 195 units on the beachfront property. The Octopool in the main view has an octopus sculpture on its central rock. An osprey nest on the property gives the resort its third camera, which was out of use for a time after Hurricane Ian and is streaming again. In 2025 the town council approved a 40-room, six-story hotel on less than half an acre (0.2 hectares) of the resort’s bayfront land, and the owner has said he will work with the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) if the nest has to be moved outside nesting season once construction starts.

Hurricane Ian struck the area as a Category 4 storm on September 28, 2022. About 1 kilometer (0.7 miles) southeast of the resort, it destroyed the Fort Myers Beach Pier and the facilities at Lynn Hall Memorial Park, beside Times Square. Lee County broke ground on a replacement pier of roughly 305 meters (1,000 feet) on August 21, 2026, and expects to finish it around September 2027.

Things to Do Near Fort Myers Beach

Bowditch Point Park, another Lee County beach park, sits at the northern tip of Estero Island, a short walk from the resort. Times Square and the pier site are about 1 kilometer (0.7 miles) southeast along Estero Boulevard. The Mound House is a museum in the island’s oldest standing structure, a 1920s home built on top of a Calusa shell mound about 2,000 years old. Matanzas Pass Preserve covers 60 acres (24 hectares) of mangrove forest with walking trails through it, a good contrast to the open beach on the camera. Lee County also runs Crescent Beach Park on the island, one of several places to reach the sand.

Beyond Estero Island, the Big Carlos Pass Bridge at the south end leads to Lovers Key State Park, where kayakers paddle the waterways around Black Island below the Welcome and Discovery Center. The same road continues to Bonita Springs and the Wonder Gardens on the Imperial River. To the west, Sanibel Island has a beach park at its eastern tip anchored by a lighthouse built in 1884, and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge has an observation tower on Wildlife Drive for birdwatching.
