About this webcam
The Aventura Webcam looks out from a high point in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, across the Intracoastal Waterway to the condominium towers of Aventura. The William Lehman Causeway cuts through the middle of the frame on a high-rise bridge, carrying traffic between Collins Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard, while the channel underneath stays open to boats running up and down the waterway. Palm trees fill the foreground, and a low waterfront building with a terracotta roof sits on the opposite bank beside the bridge. The view changes with the light on the white towers, the cloud over the mainland and the boat traffic, which can range from small runabouts to yachts. The broadcast runs around the clock, with an on-screen clock and a temperature readout in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.
About Aventura
Aventura is a small city in northeast Miami-Dade County, incorporated in 1995, with 40,242 residents at the 2020 census on just 6.86 square kilometers (2.65 square miles) of land. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and Dumfoundling Bay form its eastern border, which is exactly the edge of the city this camera watches. Downtown Miami lies about 24 kilometers (15 miles) to the south. The area was first known as Turnberry, a name it keeps in the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa and its golf course.
The bridge in the frame belongs to the William Lehman Causeway, State Road 856, which opened to traffic on October 30, 1983. It runs 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) from US 1 at Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura to State Road A1A at Collins Avenue, at the north end of Sunny Isles Beach. It carries the name of William Lehman, the US congressman who secured the federal money for its high-rise bridge, and it is the most recent of the causeways that cross Biscayne Bay and the Intracoastal in Miami-Dade County. The road is limited access and closed to pedestrians, and a frontage road, NE 192nd Street, loops underneath it. Long fenders line the channel beneath the span, guiding boats between the bridge piers.
Sunny Isles Beach, where the camera stands, became a city on June 16, 1997 and counted 22,342 residents in 2020. Its motto, “The Height of Living”, suits the row of oceanfront towers along Collins Avenue, its main road. Golden Beach borders it to the north and Haulover Park to the south, while Aventura and North Miami Beach face it across the Intracoastal.
Weather and Climate in Aventura
Aventura shares the tropical climate of the Miami area: warm all year, with a dry season and a wet one. Winter, from November to April, is the dry stretch. January highs average about 25 C (76 F), with lows near 16 C (61 F), and by April the afternoons reach about 29 C (84 F) with nights around 21 C (70 F). The dry months tend to bring the clearest skies over the towers, and the nearby Atlantic sits around 22 C (71 F) in January.
The wet season runs from about mid-May to mid-October and brings most of the area’s 1,712 millimeters (67.4 inches) of yearly rain. July averages 33 C (91 F) by day and 25 C (78 F) at night, and the sea warms to about 30 C (86 F) by late summer. October is still warm, with highs near 30 C (86 F) and lows around 23 C (74 F). The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30, with the greatest risk from mid-August to the end of September. When a storm passes, the waterway can turn grey and choppy and the far towers can vanish behind the rain for a while.
Things to Do Near Aventura
Aventura Mall is the largest mall in Florida and the fifth largest in the United States by total floor area. For something slower, the paved promenade around the Turnberry golf course gives walkers and joggers a loop of about 4.8 kilometers (3 miles). The city also runs two green spaces, Founders Park and Founders Park Bayside.
Across the causeway in Sunny Isles Beach, the Newport Fishing Pier reaches out into the Atlantic. Hurricane Wilma badly damaged the original pier in October 2005, and the rebuilt structure reopened on June 15, 2013. Haulover Park marks the south end of the city, and the Haulover bridge beyond it, completed in 1925, was the crossing that first opened this strip to traffic from Miami Beach. A little further along Biscayne Bay, Oleta River State Park covers 418 hectares (1,033 acres) and is one of the largest urban parks in Florida. Kayakers and paddleboarders head into its mangrove trails and up the Oleta River, and mountain bikers have more than 16 kilometers (10 miles) of intermediate trails plus about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) of novice routes.
