About this webcam

The Sugar Creek Webcam looks down on Sugar Creek as it bends past Crawfordsville, Indiana, with a green-painted road bridge strung across the back of the frame. Between the camera and the bridge, the creek curls around a broad, pale sandbar on the right, sparsely dotted with weeds, while shrubs and treetops crowd the left side and the foreground. It is a slow view, and the changes are the point. The sandbar grows and shrinks with the water level, the trees on both banks swing from deep summer green to fall yellow, and the light moves across the water through the day. Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power carries the stream on its City’s Cameras page, and the current YouTube broadcast has been running since September 2021.

About Sugar Creek

Sugar Creek rises in a farm field about 3 kilometers (2 miles) south of Kempton, Indiana, and runs about 150 kilometers (93 miles) through Boone, Montgomery and Parke counties before it joins the Wabash River 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Montezuma. Crawfordsville is the largest community along it. The city was founded on the creek’s bank in 1823, took its name from U.S. Treasury Secretary William H. Crawford, and serves as the county seat of Montgomery County at an elevation of 231 meters (758 feet). Farther downstream the water has cut canyons and small waterfalls into the rock, which is why two Indiana state parks, Shades and Turkey Run, sit on its banks.

The camera is listed simply as the Crawfordsville Sugar Creek Camera, and the YouTube channel behind it goes by Cville Camera. Neither names the bridge or says where the camera is mounted. The scene fits the north edge of town, where the US 231 North Washington Street bridge crosses the creek beside the old Crawfordsville power plant, but that is a likely match rather than a published fact, and the map pin marks that stretch of water. Global Energy Monitor lists the plant as built in 1955 and 1965 with a capacity of 24.1 megawatts, and its two tall smokestacks still stand although the plant is shut down.

Just downstream of the US 231 crossing, at the Lafayette Avenue bridge, the U.S. Geological Survey keeps its Sugar Creek at Crawfordsville stream gauge (site 03339500). Its readings make a useful partner to the camera. When the gauge climbs after heavy rain, the sandbar in this frame is the part to watch, since it can shrink or disappear as the water comes up.

Weather and Climate in Crawfordsville

Crawfordsville has four distinct seasons. Ten years of weather data for the area (2015 to 2024) put January highs around 36 F (2 C) and lows near 22 F (minus 5 C), so a cold spell can edge the creek with ice and leave snow on the sandbar and the bare branches along both banks. Spring is the wettest stretch, with March and May each averaging more than 110 millimeters (4.3 inches) of rain, and a run of wet days can lift the creek enough to narrow or cover the sandbar. The area sees about 1,040 millimeters (41 inches) of precipitation in a typical year.

Summer is warm, with July highs around 83 F (28 C) and nights near 67 F (19 C), and the leaves close in thickly on both banks. Fall brings the most color. October highs average about 66 F (19 C) with lows near 49 F (9 C), and the canopy turns from green to yellow. Drier weeks in late summer and early fall can drop the water and widen the sandbar, which is how it looked when this camera was checked in early October. On sunny afternoons the sun sits ahead of the lens, so glare on the water and spots on the lens can wash out part of the picture.

Things to Do Near Crawfordsville

Crawfordsville picked up the nickname Athens of Indiana early in its history, and much of that heritage is close to the creek. The General Lew Wallace Study & Museum, about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) south of the US 231 bridge, preserves the study of the local author whose Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ came out in 1880. Wabash College, founded in November 1832, has its campus in town, and the Rotary Jail Museum occupies one of the first rotary jails in the country, opened in 1882. For a walk or a bike ride, the Sugar Creek Trail runs along the south and west sides of the city.

Downstream, the creek is a popular stretch for canoeists and day visitors. Shades State Park lies about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of Crawfordsville as the crow flies, and Turkey Run State Park about 31 kilometers (19 miles), both where Sugar Creek runs through rocky canyons. Anglers fish the creek for smallmouth bass, rock bass, bluegill and catfish. Upstream in Franklin Township, the Darlington Covered Bridge spans the creek and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The creek is also the setting of The Sugar Creek Gang, a long-running series of fictional books.
