About Apple Valley Lake

Apple Valley Lake is a man-made reservoir formed by a dam on Little Jelloway Creek. Dodson-Lindblom Associates of Columbus designed the dam, which was commissioned in 1971, and the lake reached full pool in the spring of 1972. The dam stands 28 meters (91 feet) high and runs about 198 meters (650 feet) long. Behind it, the lake stretches for nearly 5.2 kilometers (3.25 miles) and traces roughly 15 kilometers (9.5 miles) of shoreline, with an average depth of about 9 meters (30 feet).

The water is the centerpiece of Apple Valley, a planned resort community that spreads across Howard and Brown townships. The 2020 census counted 5,352 residents there, at an elevation of about 350 meters (1,140 feet). Mount Vernon, the nearest city, is about 13 kilometers (8 miles) to the west-southwest, and Columbus is 64 kilometers (40 miles) beyond it to the southwest. The Kokosing Gap Trail is the best known outdoor route in Knox County. It runs for 23 kilometers (14 miles) on a paved surface along a former Pennsylvania Railroad line, and a 0-6-0 locomotive and Chesapeake and Ohio caboose No. 90776 are on display beside it. Joined with the Mohican Valley Trail, the route stretches about 29 kilometers (18 miles) through the county’s countryside. Mohican State Park covers 1,110 acres (449 hectares) next to Mohican State Forest, with the Clear Fork Gorge, a hemlock forest and the Mohican River, plus campsites and overnight accommodations. On the lake itself, anglers go after largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, saugeye, crappie, catfish, bluegill and striped bass.

In Mount Vernon, Ariel-Foundation Park has an observation tower, several lakes, a labyrinth and a set of ruins to walk through. Gambier, 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) east of Mount Vernon, is home to Kenyon College, chartered in 1824 and Ohio’s oldest private liberal arts college. Racing fans drive 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Mount Vernon to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium lies 80 kilometers (50 miles) to the south. The Ohio Caverns, near Newark, are 72 kilometers (45 miles) south of Mount Vernon.
