About this webcam

The Painesville Township Park Webcam looks out across Lake Erie from the bluff at Painesville Township Park, a 15 hectare (37 acre) lakefront park in Lake County, Ohio. Open water fills almost the whole frame below a long, flat horizon, and a tree rises into the lower left corner. Far to the left, low on the skyline, the shore runs west toward Fairport Harbor, where a breakwater reaches out into the lake. Lake Metroparks calls this its sunset cam, and late in the day the low sun can color the water and the sky above it. At other hours the view works as a quick read on the lake: whitecaps when the wind picks up, flat water on calm days, rain bands rolling in from offshore, and now and then a boat out near the breakwater.

About Painesville Township Park

Painesville Township Park sits on the Lake Erie shore at 1025 Hardy Road in Painesville Township, beside the lakeside community of Painesville-on-the-Lake and about 48 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of downtown Cleveland. The land has a long paper trail. In 1807 Samuel H. Huntington traded 121 hectares (300 acres) of land in Cleveland for a large tract on the Grand River that included the future park, and on June 13, 1911, Colbert H. Greer, son of Cornelia (Huntington) Greer, sold 15.9 hectares (39.3 acres) of it to the township’s board of park commissioners. The park opened in the early 1920s as a community playground on the lake, with swimming and sunbathing on the beach and baseball, dancing and picnics along the bluff.

Its centerpiece was a beach pavilion built at the edge of the steep bank, which served as the main way down to lake level, with a wooden stairway and a giant slide built into it. Storms and the steady erosion of the bluff eventually toppled it, and only photographs of it remain. Since 1991, Lake Metroparks has run the park under a cooperative lease with the township park commissioners. A 61 meter (200 foot) ADA-accessible pier reaches into the lake and stays open around the clock, while the rest of the park, with three baseball and softball fields, a community center and dance hall, a nature center, a playground and picnic shelters, keeps hours of 6 AM to 11 PM.

Painesville Township is mostly water on paper. Its boundary runs north to the middle of Lake Erie, so of its 459.5 square kilometers (177.4 square miles), 416.0 square kilometers (160.6 square miles) are lake. The township counted 20,453 residents at the 2020 census and also takes in the villages of Fairport Harbor and Grand River.

Weather and Climate in Painesville

Winters on this stretch of shore are cold and often snowy. January averages a high of 3 C (37 F) and a low of minus 5 C (24 F), and the open lake feeds lake-effect snow that can pile up quickly. On the camera, winter often means slate grey water under low cloud, with snow squalls blurring the horizon and frost or snow on the tree in the corner. Spring comes slowly to the lakeshore: April highs average 15 C (58 F), with lows near 5 C (40 F).

Summer is warm, with July averaging 28 C (82 F) by day and 19 C (67 F) at night. That is the season for calm water, boats off the shore and long evenings, when the sunset cam lives up to its name. October still averages 18 C (65 F) in the afternoon and 10 C (49 F) overnight, the tree in the frame turns yellow, and autumn storms can push big waves against the bluff. Painesville gets about 1,029 millimeters (40.5 inches) of precipitation a year, and its records run from 37 C (98 F) down to minus 28 C (minus 19 F).

Things to Do Near Painesville Township Park

Start in the park itself. The pier is the closest you can get to the view on the camera, and the lakefront trail follows the shore, with plans to link Painesville Township and Fairport Harbor along the lake. Fairport Harbor, just west along the shore, is home to the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse. Its 1871 sandstone tower stands 18 meters (60 feet) tall, and a spiral staircase of 69 steps climbs to an observation platform with a view over the harbor and the lake.

Headlands Beach State Park, about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) to the west, has the longest natural beach in Ohio and draws around two million visitors a year. From there a walk along the breakwall leads out toward the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light. In the other direction, Lake Metroparks’ Lake Erie Bluffs, about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) east in Perry Township, has a 15 meter (50 foot) coastal observation tower with a 360 degree view over the lake, woods, fields and wetlands, and bald eagles are seen there regularly.
