About this webcam
The Terminal Tower Webcam looks out from high on Cleveland’s best-known skyscraper, the 52-story tower on Public Square, across the northwest side of downtown to Lake Erie. The lens is extremely wide, so the horizon bends at the edges and the picture runs from the Cuyahoga River on the left to the lakefront football stadium on the right. Straight ahead stands the glass tower of the new Sherwin-Williams headquarters, with brick warehouse blocks and parking lots spread out below it. Beyond them the river winds through the Flats under a string of bridges, the port’s flat piers line the shore, and open water reaches all the way to the horizon. EarthCam runs the camera with the tower’s owner, K&D, and points to Lake Erie sunsets and ships on the Cuyahoga as the things to watch for.
About Terminal Tower
Terminal Tower rises 216 meters (708 feet) above 50 Public Square, and its antenna spire takes it to 235 meters (771 feet). The Van Sweringen brothers built it as the centerpiece of their Union Terminal complex, to designs by the architects Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. The tower was completed in 1927 and opened to tenants in 1928, although the terminal complex was not dedicated until 1930. It stayed the tallest building in the world outside New York City until the main building of Moscow State University was finished in 1953, and the tallest in Ohio until Society Center, now Key Tower, overtook it in 1991.
EarthCam and K&D Management announced this camera in January 2025, and the Port of Cleveland publicly supported the partnership, noting that the view covers the ships, barges and other vessels that navigate the Cuyahoga River. K&D bought the tower in 2016 for $38.5 million, with a plan to turn floors 4 through 15 into apartments. Underneath it sits Tower City Center, a mixed-use complex with Tower City station on the RTA Rapid Transit.
The nearest landmark in the frame is the Sherwin-Williams headquarters, a 36-story glass tower 188 meters (616 feet) tall, just across the street from Public Square. It is the fourth-tallest building in Cleveland, behind Key Tower, Terminal Tower and 200 Public Square, and the company name runs across the top of the side facing the camera. To its left, the brick blocks and surface parking of the Warehouse District fill the middle ground, and the river curls past them toward its mouth. A long breakwall runs across the lake off the shore, and the port’s piers, with a large white warehouse, sit between the river mouth and the stadium.
Weather and Climate in Cleveland
Cleveland sits on the south shore of Lake Erie, and the lake shapes its weather. January averages a daily mean of 29.1 F (-1.6 C) and July 74.5 F (23.6 C), and the city’s record high is 104 F (40 C), set on June 25, 1988. Summer evenings are when the Lake Erie sunsets EarthCam promotes come into play, with the sun going down over the water to the west and northwest. On a calm, clear day the lake can look flat and blue right out to the horizon, and by early October a few of the trees around the parking lots below are already turning.
Winter brings lake-effect snow from mid-November until the surface of the lake freezes, usually in late January or early February. The heaviest falls land on the East Side, the start of a snow belt that runs up the shore as far as Buffalo, and the city averages 162 cm (63.8 inches) of snow a year within 1,042 mm (41.03 inches) of total precipitation. Once the ice sets in, the open water across the top of the frame can turn white, and snow on the roofs and parking lots below changes the whole picture.
Things to Do Near Terminal Tower
The tower has its own observation deck on the 42nd floor, reached by riding one elevator to the 32nd floor and changing to a second. It opens on weekend afternoons, closes over the winter apart from holidays, and needs an online reservation. At street level, Public Square spreads out in front of the building, and Tower City Center, the mixed-use complex around the tower, includes the Rapid Transit station below.
North Coast Harbor, on the lakefront around East Ninth Street, gathers the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Steamship William G. Mather Maritime Museum and the submarine USS Cod, with Huntington Bank Field and Voinovich Bicentennial Park beside them. Across the river in Ohio City, the West Side Market at West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue has traded since 1840. Its present hall, completed in 1912, holds nearly 100 stalls plus an 85-stall outdoor produce arcade, and it is the oldest operating indoor and outdoor market space in Cleveland.
