SUNY Oswego began in 1861, when Edward Austin Sheldon founded it as the Oswego Primary Teachers Training School. The campus now covers about 280 hectares (700 acres) along the shore of Lake Ontario, and it enrolled 6,483 students in fall 2025, 5,293 of them undergraduates.

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum stands at the end of the West First Street Pier, in a building that once held the offices, quarters, workshop and powerhouse of a 1,000,000-bushel grain elevator.

From mid-June to September the maritime museum runs boat tours to the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, a 15-minute pontoon ride across the harbor that needs a reservation. Oswego Harborfest, a free four-day festival, draws around 150,000 visitors. Back on campus, the Rice Creek Field Station covers more than 160 hectares (400 acres) of South Campus and hosts biological research alongside public programs. Syracuse lies about 64 kilometers (40 miles) to the southeast.
