About this webcam
The Watertown International Airport Webcam looks southwest across the terminal ramp at KART, the Jefferson County airport in the Town of Hounsfield, about 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) west of the City of Watertown in Northern New York. A chain-link fence lined with orange barricades runs along the edge of the ramp, and beyond it the paved apron, its yellow taxi lines and a long strip of grass stretch out to a tree line on the horizon. The airport’s passenger jet bridge stands near the right edge of the frame, next to the terminal roofline. With two American Airlines flights a day to Philadelphia, the ramp is quiet for long stretches, so a jet pulling up to the gate and the seasons changing across the open field are the moments to watch for.
About Watertown International Airport
Jefferson County owns and operates Watertown International Airport, a public-use, FAA-certified airfield at 22529 Airport Drive. The mailing address says Dexter, but the field lies in the Town of Hounsfield. It covers about 450 hectares (1,100 acres) at an elevation of 101 meters (331 feet). Two asphalt runways cross the site: Runway 10/28 at 2,134 meters (7,001 feet) and Runway 7/25 at 1,524 meters (4,999 feet), both 46 meters (150 feet) wide. The City of Watertown bought the land in 1927, and the airport opened in 1929.
General aviation makes up most of the traffic, with 49,786 aircraft operations in the 12 months to June 2022 and 35 aircraft based on the field at the end of that year. Scheduled jet service began on November 17, 2011, and the Philadelphia route is supported by the federal Essential Air Service program. The airport recorded 23,146 passenger boardings in 2024. New York State describes it as a gateway to the Thousand Islands region and a vital hub for the soldiers and families of Fort Drum, the Army post 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Watertown.
The biggest recent change sits right beside the camera. A new terminal of about 2,320 square meters (25,000 square feet) opened in November 2025, the centerpiece of a project of roughly $33 million that drew $28 million from New York’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. It brought a larger lobby and waiting area, new ticketing and baggage claim, a car rental counter and the airport’s first passenger jet bridge. Until then, travelers boarded and left their planes directly on the tarmac. The current YouTube stream has been live since June 2023.
Weather and Climate at Watertown International Airport
Lake Ontario, only a few miles away, shapes the weather here. Watertown’s 1991 to 2020 normals put January highs at about 29 F (-2 C) and lows near 11 F (-12 C), and an average year brings 296 centimeters (116.4 inches) of snow, much of it lake-effect snow blowing in off the water. The record low is -39 F (-39 C). In winter the open field can turn white all the way to the tree line, and snow clearing on the ramp can become part of the daily scene. Spring warms slowly: April highs average about 54 F (12 C), with lows just above freezing at 35 F (1 C).
Summer is mild, with July highs near 80 F (27 C) and lows around 62 F (17 C), and the record high stands at 99 F (37 C). October brings highs around 59 F (15 C) and lows of 41 F (5 C), and the trees along the horizon can show their autumn color across the width of the frame. Precipitation adds up to 1,127 millimeters (44.4 inches) in an average year, so wet pavement is a common sight on this camera.
Things to Do Near Watertown International Airport
The village of Sackets Harbor, on the southeast shore of Lake Ontario, lies about 9 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of the terminal in the same town. Its Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site is recognized by the National Park Service as one of the top War of 1812 sites in the United States. On July 19, 1812, American forces turned back a British attack on the village and its shipyard, where 12 warships were built during the war, and on May 29, 1813, a British force crossed the lake and tried again to capture the main base of the American squadron on the lake.
In Watertown, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) east of the airport, Thompson Park spreads over 182 hectares (450 acres) designed by John Charles Olmsted and given in 1916, and Zoo New York has been part of the park since 1920. Downtown, the Paddock Arcade of 1850 is the oldest continuously operating enclosed mall in the United States, and the Public Square Historic District dates from 1805. The Black River flows west through the city toward Lake Ontario and has a worldwide reputation among kayakers. The Thousand Islands begin about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Watertown.
