About this webcam

The Watkins Glen Webcam looks north from Seneca Harbor Park, the waterfront at the southern tip of Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen, New York. A brick-paved plaza and lawn fill the foreground, and a long wooden pier runs out into the lake on the right, ending at a small red-roofed pier house. A tall-masted sailing vessel can be moored along the pier, while the docks and boats of the village marina sit behind a stone breakwater further right. Beyond them, the lake stretches away between wooded hillsides until it fades into haze. The picture shifts with the seasons: walkers and tour boats around the pier in summer, orange and gold slopes above the east shore in mid-October, and quiet grey water in winter. WENY News, based in nearby Horseheads, runs the camera as its Seneca Lake Sky Cam.

About Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen is a village of 1,829 people (2020 census) and the county seat of Schuyler County, sitting where Seneca Lake ends at its southern tip. Settlers arrived in 1791. The village was named Jefferson in 1842 and renamed in 1852 to honor Dr. Samuel Watkins. It lies at about 141 meters (463 feet) above sea level, just above the lake surface at 136 meters (446 feet). The city of Geneva sits at the far north end of the lake, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) away in a straight line, which is the direction the camera faces.

Seneca Lake is the largest of the 11 Finger Lakes. It runs 61 kilometers (38 miles) from end to end, covers 173 square kilometers (66.9 square miles) and reaches a maximum depth of 188 meters (618 feet), the deepest glacial lake entirely within New York State. Glaciers up to 3 kilometers (2 miles) thick carved its trough over many advances and retreats. The Naval Undersea Warfare Center runs a sonar test facility on the west side of the lake.

The tall masts that can appear beside the pier fit the harbor’s best-known boat, the schooner True Love. The 67-foot (20 meter) vessel was designed and built by John G. Alden in 1926 as Malabar VII, and Bing Crosby famously serenaded Grace Kelly aboard her with Cole Porter’s song “True Love”. She has sailed from Seneca Harbor Park Pier since 2008 and reached her 100th year in 2026. The marina docks on the right of the frame belong to the village marina, and Captain Bill’s Seneca Lake Cruises, a family business since 1963, also runs its tour boats from this waterfront.

Weather and Climate in Watkins Glen

Winters are cold. At Elmira Corning Regional Airport, the nearest official weather station about 25 kilometers (16 miles) south, January averages a high of 0.9 C (33.7 F) and a low of minus 8.9 C (15.9 F) over the 1991 to 2020 normals. Seneca Lake rarely freezes over, because underground springs keep feeding it and its deepest water stays near 4 C (39 F), so open grey water usually fills the middle of the frame even in January. Ten years of Open-Meteo records for the harbor itself put winter nights a few degrees milder than at the airport. Snow can still whiten the lawn and the plaza in front of the pier.

Summers are warm, with July at the airport averaging a high of 28.7 C (83.7 F) and a low of 14.6 C (58.3 F). That is boating season, when the pier and the marina are at their busiest. Spring and fall are short and mild: April afternoons at the harbor average about 14 C (58 F) and October afternoons about 17 C (63 F). Mid-October is when the hillsides above the lake take on their fall color. Rain and snow are spread fairly evenly through the year, with roughly 70 to 105 millimeters (2.8 to 4.1 inches) falling each month.

Things to Do Near Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen State Park, on the edge of the village, is the main draw: a gorge 122 meters (400 feet) deep with 19 waterfalls along a stretch of less than 3.2 kilometers (2 miles). Southwest of the village, Watkins Glen International hosts NASCAR Cup Series and WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races every year. The area has a place in music history too. The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen rock festival on July 28, 1973, drew an estimated 600,000 people, one and a half times the crowd at Woodstock in 1969.

On the water, True Love runs public sails and private charters from the pier in this frame. Captain Bill’s offers daily sightseeing trips on the Seneca Spirit, a 64-foot (20 meter) boat that carries up to 115 passengers, plus dinner cruises on the larger Seneca Legacy, from mid-May to mid-October. Ashore, more than 50 wineries line the Seneca Lake Wine Trail around the lake. Anglers know Seneca Lake as the lake trout capital of the world, and it hosts the National Lake Trout Derby.
