About this webcam

The Sutter’s Marina Webcam looks over the boat slips of Sutter’s Canandaigua Marina, on the city pier at the north end of Canandaigua Lake in Canandaigua, New York. Rows of pontoon boats and runabouts fill the foreground, many of them under blue, red or tan covers, and a floating dock walkway runs down the right side of the frame. Behind the slips, a sea wall lined with trees and parked cars crosses the picture, and past it the open lake stretches away to a low wooded shore. Rochester news station News 8 WROC streams the view on its YouTube channel. It is a handy camera for judging the lake before a day on the water: you can often read the wind on the surface, see how many boats are out, and watch the trees along the wall turn yellow in fall.

About Sutter’s Marina and Canandaigua Lake

Sutter’s Canandaigua Marina sits at 808 South Main Street, close to the Inn on the Lake and the New York Wine and Culinary Center. The business has served boaters since 1993 and has more than 190 slips with power and water for boats up to 10.4 meters (34 feet). It rents boats by the half day or full day, sells new and pre-owned boats, services MerCruiser, Yamaha and Volvo Penta engines, and stores boats over the winter under shrink wrap.

Canandaigua Lake is the westernmost of the major Finger Lakes and the fourth largest by size. It runs 24.9 kilometers (15.5 miles) from Canandaigua south toward Naples, measures 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) across at its widest and reaches 84 meters (276 feet) deep, with its surface at 210 meters (688 feet) above sea level. The name comes from the Seneca language and is usually translated as “the chosen spot.” The lake is also the only drinking water source for Canandaigua and the surrounding communities, and the island at the north end was renamed Skenoh Island in 2021, from a Seneca word for health or peace.

The City Pier that the marina shares dates from 1848, and the first boathouses went up along it in the 1850s. By 1888 more than 80 of them lined the pier and the basin beside it. In 1903 the pier was enlarged to carry train and trolley tracks for the steamboats that moved farm produce and passengers along the lake, and that winter the village built the finger piers the boathouses stand on today, with some buildings moved across the ice. The city added the boathouses to the Canandaigua Historic District in 1990, and a Boathouse Owners’ Association enforces the rules that bar anyone from living in them. Canandaigua itself, home to 10,576 people at the 2020 census, is the county seat of Ontario County and lies 39 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of Rochester.

Weather and Climate in Canandaigua

Summer is the marina’s high season. July averages a high of 81 F (27 C) and a low of 62 F (17 C), and Sutter’s keeps its longest hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fall cools quickly: October averages 61 F (16 C) by day and 43 F (6 C) at night, and the trees along the sea wall and the far shore turn yellow and orange, which is exactly what the camera showed in early October.

Winter is cold. January averages a high of 33 F (1 C) and a low of 18 F (-8 C), and the city’s record low is -17 F (-27 C). Because the marina offers winter storage, the slips can look much emptier in the colder months than in the summer. Spring warms slowly, with April averaging 55 F (13 C) by day and 35 F (2 C) at night. The record high is 101 F (38 C).

Things to Do Near Sutter’s Marina

Kershaw Park sits right next to the pier, with a sandy beach (open to the public for a small fee), walking paths along the lake, picnic areas and a playground. The historic boathouses of the City Pier are a short stroll away, and the Canandaigua Lady, a replica of a 19th-century double-decked paddlewheel steamboat, runs dining and sightseeing cruises on the lake. If you would rather drive yourself, Sutter’s rents boats from the same docks you see on the camera.

Away from the water, the New York Wine and Culinary Center opened in downtown Canandaigua in 2006. Sonnenberg Gardens pairs a Victorian mansion with 20 hectares (50 acres) of gardens, and the Granger Homestead hosts the Festival of Trees. The Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center, known locally as CMAC, stages performances in the city, and Bristol Mountain, a winter resort, lies 21 kilometers (13.2 miles) to the southwest.
