About this webcam
The West Seneca Webcam looks out from a home weather station in West Seneca, New York, a town of 45,500 people on the southeastern edge of Buffalo. The camera sits above a lawn inside the French Quarter, a mobile home community off French Road, and faces a quiet loop road with a planted island at its center. A straight lane lined with mature trees runs back from the middle of the frame, single-story homes with carports stand to the left and right, and a white roof crosses the bottom edge. It is an ordinary suburban view, and that is its value: the trees, lawns and pavement show what the weather over the Buffalo suburbs is doing right now, from fall color to a fresh coat of lake-effect snow.
About West Seneca
West Seneca covers 55.46 square kilometers (21.41 square miles) of Erie County, with the City of Buffalo along its northwestern border. The town lies at an elevation of 196 meters (643 feet), and both Cazenovia Creek and the Buffalo River wind through it. Its hamlets carry older names: Ebenezer, East Seneca, Gardenville and New Ebenezer. The camera is in the northern part of town, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east-southeast of Buffalo City Hall.
The land was once part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation of the Seneca, which kept European settlement out until the middle of the 19th century. Around 1843 the Ebenezer Society, a German religious group also known as the Community of True Inspiration, bought land here and built four settlements. Most of its members later moved to Amana, Iowa, and by 1863 the villages had been abandoned. The town was formed in 1851 from parts of Cheektowaga and Hamburg, and took the name West Seneca in 1852 to avoid confusion with another Seneca in Ontario County.
The camera belongs to West Seneca Weather, a personal weather station with records going back to December 2013. Its website pairs this picture, which it calls the Gazebo Cam, with live readings from the station’s sensors, National Weather Service forecasts and radar from the Buffalo radar site, plus links to the station’s history on Weather Underground and PWSweather.
Weather and Climate in West Seneca
West Seneca shares Buffalo’s climate, and the official figures come from Buffalo Niagara International Airport. January averages a high of 0.1 C (32 F) and a low of minus 7.2 C (19 F). Snow defines the season. The airport averages 242 centimeters (95.4 inches) a year, and December is the snowiest month at 64 centimeters (25.3 inches). Much of it falls as lake-effect snow, in bands off Lake Erie whose path depends on the wind direction. When a band sets up over the town, the lawns and the loop road in this frame are where it shows first.
Spring warms slowly, with April averaging 12.6 C (54.7 F) by day and 2.5 C (36.5 F) at night. July brings highs around 26.8 C (80.2 F) and lows of 17.3 C (63.1 F), and southwest breezes off Lake Erie take the edge off the heat. By then the trees along the lane in the middle of the frame are in full leaf. October averages 15.3 C (59.6 F) by day and 6.6 C (43.9 F) at night, and in mid-October the trees in front of the camera were turning yellow. Buffalo records about 1,033 millimeters (40.68 inches) of precipitation and roughly 2,207 hours of sunshine a year.
