About this webcam

The American Falls Webcam looks upriver from the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel on the Canadian bank, with the American Falls pouring over its crest on the left and the white plume of the Horseshoe Falls rising in the distance on the right. The wooded cliff of Goat Island separates the two, and the narrow Bridal Veil Falls spills down at the right-hand end of the American Falls, split off by tiny Luna Island. Below, tour boats cut across the basin toward the spray, and the riverside road at the foot of Clifton Hill runs along the bottom of the frame, where people line the railings on busy days. The picture shifts with the seasons, from green summer cliffs to autumn color on Goat Island and snow along the banks in winter.

About the American Falls

The American Falls lies entirely on the United States side of the Niagara River. Its crest is about 250 meters (830 feet) wide in a straight line, or about 290 meters (950 feet) if you follow its jagged lip. The water drops 21 to 34 meters (70 to 110 feet) onto the pile of fallen rock at its base, and the full height from the crest down to the river is 57 meters (188 feet). Only about 11 percent of the Niagara River goes over it, in a sheet roughly 0.6 meters (2 feet) deep at the crest, while most of the rest goes over the Horseshoe Falls beyond Goat Island.

The fallen rock at the base is what turns the lower half of the falls into churning white water on the camera. A large rockfall in 1954 brought down part of Prospect Point at the northern end of the falls. From June to November 1969 the flow over the American Falls was blocked entirely so the rock face and the rockfall below it could be surveyed, leaving the cliff bare for months.

The camera sits high on the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel at 5875 Falls Avenue, formerly the Sheraton on the Falls, a 669-room hotel that anchors the Falls Avenue Resort. From the Canadian bank it sees the full face of the American Falls at an angle, with the Horseshoe Falls lined up behind it. A second camera on the same hotel points downriver at the Rainbow Bridge.

Weather and Climate at Niagara Falls

Winter at the falls is cold and snowy. January averages a high of 0.2 C (32 F) and a low of minus 7 C (19 F), and the Niagara Parks weather station in town records about 153 centimeters (60 inches) of snow in a normal year. On the camera that can mean snow on Goat Island and along both banks for long stretches. April brings highs around 12.5 C (55 F) and lows near 2 C (36 F), and the trees on the island come into leaf later in spring.

Summer highs reach 27.5 C (82 F) in July, with nights around 17.5 C (64 F), and the tour boats run through the warm months. October still averages 15.5 C (60 F) by day and 6.7 C (44 F) at night, and the trees on Goat Island and the Canadian bank turn orange and red. Grey, overcast days flatten the scene into slate water and white spray, while clear days bring out the green of the river below the falls.

Things to Do Near the American Falls

Tour boats like the ones crossing the camera’s view are the quickest way to get close. On the Canadian side, Niagara City Cruises sails its Voyage to the Falls from a dock in the lower gorge just below Clifton Hill, and in 2026 the season opened on May 1 with departures every 30 minutes. On the American side, the Prospect Point Observation Tower stands 86 meters (282 feet) tall from the bottom of the gorge, and its elevators take visitors down to board the Maid of the Mist. On Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds attraction leads down to the foot of Bridal Veil Falls.

Clifton Hill, the tourist street beside the hotel, is lined with museums, arcades, haunted houses and themed restaurants, with the Niagara SkyWheel turning 53.3 meters (175 feet) above it. The Rainbow Bridge, a short walk from the hotel, lets walkers cross to the New York side with a passport or another accepted travel document. In the evening, Queen Victoria Park along the river is a free spot to watch the falls lit up from dusk, from 7:30 pm to 11 pm in October, and in the 2026 season Niagara Parks set off fireworks over the falls at 10 pm every night from mid-May to mid-October.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the American Falls located?

The American Falls is on the Niagara River in Niagara Falls, New York, on the United States side of the border with Ontario, Canada. It sits between Prospect Point and Luna Island, less than a kilometer (about half a mile) upstream of the Rainbow Bridge, with Goat Island separating it from the Horseshoe Falls.

What can you see on the American Falls Webcam?

The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls fill the left side of the frame, Goat Island’s cliff runs across the middle, and the Horseshoe Falls and its mist plume sit in the distance on the right. Tour boats cross the basin below, and the riverside road and plaza at the foot of Clifton Hill run along the bottom edge.

What is the weather like at Niagara Falls?

Winters are cold, with January highs around 0 C (32 F) and roughly 153 centimeters (60 inches) of snow a year. Summers are warm, with July highs near 27.5 C (82 F), and spring and autumn sit in between.

How tall is the American Falls?

The water drops 21 to 34 meters (70 to 110 feet) from the crest to the rock pile at the base, and the total height from the crest to the river is 57 meters (188 feet). The crest is about 290 meters (950 feet) long following its jagged edge.

What is the difference between the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls?

The American Falls is the straighter, rock-strewn falls on the American side, and it carries only about 11 percent of the Niagara River’s flow. The Horseshoe Falls, behind Goat Island in the distance on this camera, takes most of the rest and throws up the tall mist cloud.

Was the American Falls ever turned off?

Yes. From June to November 1969 the flow over the American Falls was blocked so the rock face and the rockfall at its base could be surveyed. The water was then allowed back over the crest.

Is the American Falls Webcam live at night?

Yes. The hotel streams it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the operator says its cameras also catch the fireworks shows over the falls. Both falls are lit every night from dusk, and in October the lights run from 7:30 pm to 11 pm.
