About this webcam
The Ashdod Beach Webcam looks west from the sand at Yud-Alef Beach in southern Ashdod, straight out over the Mediterranean. A cream lifeguard tower with pale blue stairs stands left of center, a line of white shade canopies runs along the beach on either side of it, and the surf breaks in long white rows just behind them. Cargo ships often sit far out on the horizon. In the lower right is a beach restaurant with thatched parasols and strings of lights, and the operator pixelates its seating area. A second tab switches to Marina Beach, a short way up the coast beside the Ashdod Marina, where a long rock breakwater crosses the left side of the picture. Both cameras keep streaming after dark, when the restaurant lights and the lights of ships at sea are most of what remains.
About Ashdod Beach
Ashdod is a city of 228,562 people (2024) on Israel’s southern Mediterranean coast, 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of Tel Aviv. The modern city was founded only in 1956. Its port, at the northern end of the city, is the largest in Israel and handles about 60 percent of the country’s port cargo. The shoreline is split into named beaches that run, from north to south, Mei Ami, Lido, Pine Beach, Hakshatot, Marina Beach, a separate beach for religious swimmers, Yud-Alef and finally Riviera.
Yud-Alef is Hebrew for the number 11. The beach lies about 900 meters (0.5 miles) south of the Ashdod Marina, and the camera faces open sea rather than any harbor wall, so the swell rolls in unbroken across the full width of the frame. The canopies stand in a long row either side of the lifeguard tower, and on warm afternoons people gather in the shade beneath them. The ships on the horizon are most likely vessels waiting their turn for the port to the north, which is itself out of shot.
The Marina Beach camera sits closer to the city center, next to a marina with berths for nearly 550 boats. Its picture is softer than the main view and a plain grey band covers the bottom of the frame, but the shoreline, the breaking waves and the breakwater stand out clearly on a bright day, with ships again lined up on the horizon.
Weather and Climate in Ashdod
Summer is long, hot and almost completely dry. From June to September daytime highs sit around 29 to 31 C (84 to 88 F), and nights in July and August average 23 to 24 C (73 to 75 F). The sea is at its warmest in August, at about 29 C (84 F), and this is the season when the canopies on the Ashdod Beach Webcam are most likely to be full. Spring warms quickly, from about 20 C (68 F) in March to 23 C (73 F) in April and 26 to 27 C (80 F) by late May.
Autumn stays warm for a long time. October still averages highs near 28 C (83 F) and November around 24 C (75 F), while the first rain showers come through. Winter is mild and wet: January highs average about 17 C (63 F), lows about 10 C (50 F), and most of the year’s rain falls between November and March. The sea cools to about 18 C (64 F) in February. Winter storms can push high surf up the sand and leave the beach close to empty.
Things to Do Near Ashdod Beach
The beachfront promenade is the obvious walk. Heading north from Yud-Alef, it is about 900 meters (0.5 miles) to the Ashdod Marina, where surfing, sailing and diving schools operate from the waterfront. Beyond the marina lies Hakshatot Beach, whose name means arches in Hebrew, and further north still is Lido Beach, about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) long. The south of the city holds Ashdod-Yam, the ancient harbor town of Ashdod, where the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik built a coastal fort in the 7th century. Its remains measure 35 by 55 meters (115 by 180 feet).
Away from the sand, Ashdod has two museums worth a few hours. The Ashdod Museum of Art, part of the Monart center, has 12 galleries and two exhibition halls. The Corinne Mamane Museum of Philistine Culture is the only museum in the world devoted to Philistine culture. Ashkelon is a short drive further down the coast.
