About this webcam

The Arizona State Fair Webcam looks down on the midway at the Arizona State Fairgrounds on McDowell Road in Phoenix. Stands selling ice cream and frozen bananas fill the foreground, a tall white drop tower rises through the middle of the frame, and a Ferris wheel turns to its left. Behind the rides sits the curved, saddle-shaped roof of Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, with this year’s dates on a banner across its front. The fair streams the camera on its own YouTube channel. On open days the paths between the stands fill with visitors, and the rides spin against a usually clear desert sky. The 2026 fair runs from October 1 to November 1 and opens Thursdays through Sundays, so from Monday to Wednesday the same rides usually stand idle. The stream has run around the clock since October 5, but it is the fair’s seasonal broadcast, so outside the fair season the player can be empty until the next season’s stream begins.

About the Arizona State Fair

The fair first opened in 1884 as the Arizona Territorial Fair, decades before Arizona became the 48th state. It has not run every single year since. There were no fairs in 1917 and 1918, from 1930 to 1932, or from 1942 to 1945, and the 2020 edition was called off because of COVID-19, the first cancellation in 75 years. Today it is run by the Arizona Exposition and State Fair, a self-supporting state agency, and it draws more than a million visitors in a typical year. The 2026 edition carries the theme “A State of Wonder”.

The building just right of center in the view is Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which opened on November 3, 1965. Its architects, Lescher & Mahoney with Place & Place, hung a tension-cable roof in a saddle shape and laid more than 1,000 precast concrete panels across it, which explains the dip in the roofline that stands out on camera. The arena seats 14,870 for basketball and was home to the Phoenix Suns from 1968 to 1992, the years that earned it the nickname “the Madhouse on McDowell”. During the fair it hosts the concert series.

The fairgrounds sit in the Encanto area of central Phoenix at 1826 West McDowell Road, about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) north of the Arizona State Capitol. Several buildings on the grounds are older than the Coliseum by decades: the Gem and Mineral Building dates from 1918 and the WPA Civic Building from 1938.

Weather and Climate at the Arizona State Fair

The fair season falls in a warm month even by Phoenix standards. October highs at Phoenix Sky Harbor average 32 C (89 F), with lows of 19 C (66 F), based on the 1991 to 2020 normals, so afternoons on the midway can still be hot while evenings are mild. The National Weather Service counts the monsoon season from June 15 to September 30, so the fair opens just after the official end of the summer storm season, and the sky above the Coliseum is most often a clean blue on camera.

Outside the fair weeks, the city around the camera runs through a wide range. January brings average highs of 20 C (68 F) and lows of 8 C (46 F). April warms to 30 C (86 F) by day and 16 C (61 F) at night, and July is the hottest stretch, with average highs of 41 C (106 F) and nights that stay around 29 C (85 F). Phoenix receives only about 183 millimeters (7.2 inches) of rain a year and gets 87 percent of its possible sunshine, so overcast days are the exception in this view.

Things to Do Near the Arizona State Fair

Encanto Park lies about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) northeast of the fairgrounds. The 90-hectare (222-acre) city park wraps around a lagoon where pedal boats are for rent, though swimming is not allowed. At its center is Enchanted Island Amusement Park, a smaller and gentler counterpart to the fair midway, with small roller coasters, carnival rides, a train ride, a carousel and bumper boats, plus a splash pad in the warmer months.

Two museums are a short drive away. The Heard Museum, founded in 1929 and recognized internationally for its collections and exhibitions, is about 2.3 kilometers (1.5 miles) east on Central Avenue. The Arizona Capitol Museum, at 1700 West Washington Street about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) south of the fairgrounds, has free admission and exhibits on the story of government in the 48th state.
