About Blue Ridge

Blue Ridge sits at about 537 meters (1,762 feet) in the far north of Georgia, 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Atlanta by Georgia 5 and 515. It is the largest city in Fannin County and has been the county seat since 1895, when the courthouse moved here from Morganton. The 2020 census counted 1,253 residents.

The town exists because of the railroad. It was laid out in 1886, when the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad was extended to the site, and incorporated the next year by Colonel Mike McKinney, the man who built the line. The tracks still run through downtown, and the historic depot on Depot Street is now the starting point of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Before the railroad, this was Cherokee country.

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway leaves from the historic depot at 241 Depot Street. Its trains run a 42 kilometer (26 mile) round trip beside the Toccoa River to McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, two small towns that meet at the state line. The 2-hour express turns straight back, while the 4-hour ride adds a 2-hour layover there. Just across the line the river changes its name and becomes the Ocoee.

Blue Ridge Lake covers about 1,300 hectares (3,300 acres), with roughly 97 kilometers (60 miles) of wooded shoreline. Its dam, 51 meters (167 feet) high and 300 meters (1,000 feet) long, was finished in 1931 by the Toccoa Electric Power Company and has belonged to the Tennessee Valley Authority since 1939. Upstream of the lake, the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge carries the Benton MacKaye Trail across the river on a main span of 80.8 meters (265 feet). Built in 1977, it is often called the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi. Back in town, downtown is known for its historic buildings, local folk art and bluegrass music, and in the holiday season the Blue Ridge on Ice rink opens next to the Farmer’s Market.
