About this webcam

The Gatlinburg Webcam streams from Clayton’s Landing, the summit plaza of Gatlinburg SkyPark on Crockett Mountain, right above downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The camera turns between several angles. From the overlook it looks out over the rooftops and the lattice tower of the Space Needle to the forested ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains, which fill the whole horizon. Other passes sweep across the brick plaza, the food kiosk and the stairs that lead toward the SkyBridge, then over the covered deck, where visitors sit in rocking chairs by the fire pits. The light changes the scene more than anything else: flat blue haze over the ridges at midday, warm late sun on the town in the afternoon, and after dark the stream keeps running under the string lights along the deck roof.

About Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg sits at the main Tennessee entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) north of the Sugarlands Visitor Center and 63 kilometers (39 miles) southeast of Knoxville. It is a small town with an enormous visitor count. The 2020 census recorded 3,577 residents, while the park next door logged 11,527,939 recreation visits in 2025, more than any other national park in the country. Much of that traffic funnels along the Parkway, downtown’s main street, which runs on to Pigeon Forge, 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) to the north.

The camera’s perch has a long history. The Gatlinburg SkyLift opened in 1954 as the first four-season scenic chairlift in the South. Today’s three-seat lift, built in 2017, carries riders up Crockett Mountain in about ten minutes, topping out at roughly 549 meters (1,800 feet) above sea level. The Chimney Tops 2 wildfire burned into Gatlinburg on November 28, 2016 and destroyed the lift’s top terminal and towers. The rebuilt lift reopened on May 26, 2017, and SkyPark says about 90 percent of the trees on its slope burned, which is part of why the summit view is so open today.

The SkyBridge followed in May 2019. It crosses almost 213 meters (700 feet) in a single span, hangs about 152 meters (500 feet) above downtown and has 9 meters (30 feet) of glass floor at its midpoint. SkyPark bills it as the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America. Clayton’s Landing, the plaza this camera watches, opened on December 13, 2024. It covers about 930 square meters (10,000 square feet), seats more than 235 people among gliders, picnic tables and fire pits, and is named after Clayton Watson, who ran SkyPark as general manager for 38 years.

Weather and Climate in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg has four distinct seasons, softened by its sheltered valley. On 1991 to 2020 normals, January averages a high of 8 C (47 F) and a low of -3 C (27 F), while July averages 28 C (83 F) by day and 17 C (63 F) at night. Rain falls in every month, about 1,478 millimeters (58 inches) a year, and snow in town is light, at around 20 centimeters (8 inches) a season. The high ridges on the horizon run much colder and wetter than the streets below, so in winter they can turn white while the rooftops stay clear.

The camera shows those seasons plainly. In late September the slopes below the deck are still fully green, the plaza is dressed with pumpkins and corn stalks, and clear afternoons put hard blue sky over the ridgeline. Summer mornings often open with the soft haze that gave the Smokies their name, as low cloud lifts out of the hollows. Autumn color works its way down from the high peaks toward town, and winter strips the hillsides back to gray trunks, which opens more of the town to the camera.

Things to Do Near Gatlinburg

Everything at the camera’s own summit is walkable: the SkyBridge, the SkyTrail with its Tulip Tower, which opened in November 2021, and 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of dog-friendly nature trails added in September 2024. SkyPark photographs Mount Le Conte from those trails, and at 2,010 meters (6,593 feet) it is the third-highest peak in the park. Back in town, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts has taught classes since 1912, and the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community strings studios and galleries along a 13-kilometer (8-mile) loop road a short drive from downtown. Ober Mountain, the only ski area in Tennessee, is reached by an aerial tramway that runs 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) from downtown.

The national park starts where the town ends. Newfound Gap Road (US 441) climbs from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Newfound Gap, at 1,538 meters (5,046 feet) the lowest drivable pass between the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the park, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road. Beyond the gap, a spur road leads toward Kuwohi, the park’s highest summit at 2,025 meters (6,643 feet), which carried the name Clingmans Dome until September 2024. Closer to town, the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a narrow, one-way 8.9-kilometer (5.5-mile) loop. The Trillium Gap trailhead for Grotto Falls comes about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) in, and the Place of a Thousand Drips spills down a rock wall near the end. The road closes for part of the year and does not allow buses, trailers or motor homes.
