Lebanon is the county seat of Wilson County, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of downtown Nashville. It was incorporated in 1801, sits at an elevation of 161 meters (528 feet), and had 38,431 residents at the 2020 census. The town is named after the biblical cedars of Lebanon. Cumberland University was founded here in 1842, and Cracker Barrel, which Dan Evins started in Lebanon in 1969, still keeps its corporate headquarters in town.

Follow West Main Street east and it leads to the Public Square, the old heart of the county seat. Cumberland University’s campus lies less than a kilometer (about half a mile) southwest of the Square. Fiddlers Grove Historic Village, at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center, gathers more than 50 buildings and exhibits dating from 1795 to 1950, including a one-room schoolhouse, a working blacksmith shop, a jail and a grist mill. The same grounds host the Wilson County Fair, which also carries the Tennessee State Fair name.
Cedars of Lebanon State Park is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) south of town. The park covers 364 hectares (900 acres) inside the 3,810-hectare (9,420-acre) Cedars of Lebanon State Forest, which opened in 1937 as a New Deal project. Its cedar glades hold about 350 plant species, 29 of them found only in these glades, among them the Tennessee coneflower. The Cedar Glades Trail, Limestone Sinks Trail and Hidden Springs Trail wind through the park, and the Dixon Merritt Nature Center, 117 campsites and an 18-hole disc golf course round it out. Race fans can also reach Nashville Superspeedway, which hosts NASCAR races in Wilson County.
