The Huntington Beach Pier Webcam is the City of Huntington Beach’s own camera, set high above the shore end of the pier and pointed straight out along its concrete deck. The deck runs away from the lens toward the red-roofed restaurant at the far end, with open Pacific on both sides. Surfers wait in the lineup off the south side of the pilings, waves break white across the sand right below the camera, and walkers, joggers and anglers move up and down the pier through the day. A second tab carries the city’s Lifeguard HQ camera, which looks across the beach path and the wide sand south of the pier. Both cameras stream around the clock, and the lamp posts along the deck keep the pier lit on screen after dark.

About Huntington Beach Pier

Huntington Beach sits on the Orange County coast, 56 kilometers (35 miles) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and calls itself Surf City USA, a name the city has registered as a trademark. It had 198,711 residents at the 2020 census and 15.3 kilometers (9.5 miles) of sandy beach. The pier meets the shore where Main Street crosses Pacific Coast Highway, so the camera sits at the point where the town’s main street ends at the sand.

The pier is 564 meters (1,850 feet) long, and its deck stands about 9 meters (30 feet) above sea level. A wooden pier went up here in 1904, and the concrete pier dedicated in 1914 was then the longest and highest concrete pleasure pier in the United States. It was lengthened by 150 meters (500 feet) in 1931, then damaged by the 1933 earthquake, a 1939 storm, and again in 1983 and on January 7, 1988. Work on the present pier began in October 1990, and it reopened on July 18, 1992.

The red-roofed building at the end of the deck tops out 23 meters (77 feet) above sea level. Ruby’s Diner ran it from 1996 until February 2021, and Broad Street Oyster Company has served from it since August 2023. The U.S. Open of Surfing is held on the south side of the pier every summer, the same stretch of sand the Lifeguard HQ tab looks across, while the Surfing Walk of Fame sets plaques honoring surfers into the Main Street sidewalk behind the camera.

The ocean keeps temperatures in a narrow band all year. January highs average 18 C (64 F) with lows of 9 C (48 F), and most of the year’s 296 millimeters (11.65 inches) of rain falls in midwinter, the season when the deck on the camera is most likely to be wet and quiet. Spring warms only slowly, and April averages 19 C (66 F) by day and 12 C (54 F) at night.

Summer is mild rather than hot. July highs average 22 C (71 F) and August, the warmest month, 23 C (73 F), with nights around 17 to 18 C (63 to 64 F). This is the season of the U.S. Open, and typically of the busiest sand on the Lifeguard HQ view. Fall holds on to the warmth, with October still averaging 22 C (71 F) by day and 15 C (59 F) at night. The sea in the frame ranges from about 13 C (55 F) to 18 C (65 F) through the year.

Things to Do Near Huntington Beach Pier

Start at the foot of the pier. The Surfing Walk of Fame runs along the Main Street sidewalk, with its companion Surfers’ Hall of Fame close by, and the International Surfing Museum is the other stop for anyone after the town’s surf history. A walk out along the deck ends at Broad Street Oyster Company under the red roof, and anglers fish from the rails on the way.

Along the coast, Huntington State Beach continues southeast toward the Santa Ana River, while Huntington Dog Beach, also known as The Cliffs, and Bolsa Chica State Beach lie to the northwest. Inland of Bolsa Chica, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve protects more than 4.9 square kilometers (1,200 acres) of natural wetland. Huntington Central Park, opened in 1974, holds the Shipley Nature Center, and Huntington Harbour, in the northwest of the city, is the place for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on calm water.
