About this webcam
The Broad Haven Webcam looks over the seafront of Broad Haven, a beach village on St Brides Bay in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, from Haven Sports, the surf shop on Marine Road. Two cameras run here. The South View looks across a junction on Marine Road to the stone wall above the beach, the sand and the grassy cliffs at the south end of the beach, with the surf breaking on the right of the frame. The North View turns the other way, over rooftops and a garden wall to the promenade railings and the rock stack known locally as Lion Rock. The beach faces west into the open Atlantic, so the picture changes by the hour, from wide, flat sand at low tide to rows of white water on a windy day.
About Broad Haven
Broad Haven sits in the southeast corner of St Brides Bay, roughly 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of Haverfordwest along the B4341. Together with its neighbor Little Haven it forms The Havens community, which counted 1,328 people at the 2001 census. Visitors have come here for the sea since at least 1840, when it was already known as a bathing resort. The village also made headlines in February 1977, when 14 children at Broad Haven Primary School said they had seen a yellow, cigar-shaped craft land in a field next to the school, a story retold in the 2023 Netflix series Encounters.
At high tide the beach is a long, narrow strip of sand and pebbles. At low tide a huge spread of firm sand opens up, with cliffs at both ends. The north end, the one in the North View, shows folded rock strata, natural arches and Lion Rock, which stands on the sand in front of the headland. The beach holds Blue Flag and Seaside Award status, and it is used for surfing, windsurfing and sailing when conditions allow.
In the South View, a white fish and chip shop fills the left edge, and the road bends past a fingerpost before running south beside a low stone wall toward the cliff. Blue information boards stand at the top of the beach, and beyond them the coast curves away toward the southern arm of the bay, with a small island on the horizon at the far right. In the North View, the breakers roll toward Lion Rock, houses line the right side, and the long cliffs on the far side of St Brides Bay mark the horizon. Haven Sports sells wetsuits, surfboards, windsurfers, kayaks and bodyboards, and its own webcam page pairs both cameras with a live wind, temperature and pressure readout.
Weather and Climate in Broad Haven
The climate is mild and wet. At the Met Office station at Milford Haven, the 1991 to 2020 averages give January highs of about 9 C (48 F) and lows of about 4 C (40 F). Summers stay cool: July and August top out near 19 C (67 F), with nights around 13 C (56 F). Rainfall there averages about 1,080 millimeters (42.5 inches) a year, with November the wettest month at about 137 millimeters (5.4 inches) over some 18 rainy days.
Autumn and winter tend to bring the biggest swells, when Atlantic storms push white water up the beach. Days are short then, with under 8 hours of daylight around the winter solstice. Spring warms slowly, to about 13 C (55 F) by April. By June the evenings stretch to more than 16.5 hours of daylight, and the beach has had lifeguard cover through the summer season.
Things to Do Near Broad Haven
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs right through the village. It covers 299 kilometers (186 miles) and is part of the 1,400 kilometer (870 mile) Wales Coast Path. Head south and the path climbs over the headland to Little Haven, a small village between two high cliffs with a slipway and three pubs: the St Brides Inn, the Castle and the Swan. At low tide you can reach it across the sand instead. Going north, a circular walk of 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) follows the cliffs to Druidston Haven, named after Drue, a Norman knight, and the coast path carries on to Nolton Haven and the long beach at Newgale.
For wildlife, boats leave Martin’s Haven near Marloes Sands for Skomer Island from April to October, a crossing of about 15 minutes. Puffins nest on the island from May to July, and May and June are the best months to see them. Back in Broad Haven itself there is a youth hostel, YHA Broad Haven, and the village is served by the 311 bus. Haven Sports on Marine Road lists opening hours of 9:30 am to 5 pm, seven days a week.
