About this webcam
The Llyn Brenig Nest Box Webcam looks inside a wooden nest box at Llyn Brenig, the Welsh Water reservoir on the Denbigh Moors of North Wales. The picture is black and white. Plank walls run down both sides, a rough, speckled wall faces the camera, and an entrance passage set high in that wall shows a small patch of daylight at its far end. Loose, sandy material scattered with small stones covers the floor. In early October the box is empty, which is normal outside the spring and summer nesting season. The current broadcast has been live on the reservoir’s own YouTube channel since May 2024, so this is the camera to come back to when the nesting season starts.
About the Llyn Brenig Nest Box
Llyn Brenig does not say which box this is: the stream title names only the camera, an Axis FA54. The closest match is the sand martin hotel that Welsh Water built at the water’s edge in 2024, within sight of Caffi Brenig in the visitor centre. The operator describes fifty separate nest boxes, each designed to resemble a natural burrow, behind a front face coated in Sandtex and sand to look like a natural bank, with Perspex sheets to keep climbing predators out. The hotel has cameras installed, and screens in the visitor centre show the colony in summer. The sandy floor and tunnel-like entrance fit that design, and the stream began in late May 2024, the hotel’s first season, but the link is likely rather than confirmed.
If this is a sand martin chamber, the busy months are late spring and summer. Sand martins are among the first spring migrants, reaching Llyn Brenig from mid-March to mid-April. In natural banks both birds dig a horizontal tunnel 50 to 90 centimeters (20 to 35 inches) long with a chamber at the end. Eggs follow in late May or early June, incubation lasts about 14 days, the chicks hatch together and fledge at 19 to 24 days old, and the birds leave between late July and September to winter in the Sahel. Sand martins and their nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The reservoir sits about 370 meters (1,200 feet) above sea level, on the border between Conwy and Denbighshire. Engineers built it between 1973 and 1976 to regulate the flow of the River Dee, part of the system that supplies north-east Wales and North West England. It covers about 3.7 square kilometers (920 acres), and its dam reaches 45 meters (148 feet) at its highest point. Archaeologists found a Mesolithic camp here dated to around 5700 BC, plus a Bronze Age ring cairn and several barrows, and archaeological trails now lead around the lake.
Weather and Climate at Llyn Brenig
Llyn Brenig is high and exposed, and the operator warns that at 1,200 feet it can get a bit blowy. Climate reanalysis averages for 1995 to 2024 put January highs around 5 C (41 F) and lows near 1 C (34 F), with a few days of snow each month from December to March. Spring warms slowly, and April highs average about 10 C (50 F), around the time the first sand martins return.
Summer is mild rather than warm, with July and August highs near 17 C (63 F) and lows around 11 C (52 F), the weeks when young sand martins are being fed. Autumn turns wet: October highs sit near 12 C (53 F), and each month from October to January brings about 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain, out of roughly 1,100 millimeters (43 inches) a year. Inside the box, the only sign of the weather is the patch of daylight at the end of the entrance passage, bright on June evenings and gone early in winter.
Things to Do Near Llyn Brenig
Start at the visitor centre, where Caffi Brenig looks over the water through floor-to-ceiling windows, alongside a gift shop, a fishing shop and an osprey exhibition. Seven named trails cover the estate for walkers and cyclists. The Dam trail is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), the Brenig trail circles the whole lake in 15 kilometers (9.5 miles), and the longest, the Two Lakes trail, covers 23 kilometers (14.5 miles), with Alwen Reservoir just to the west. Bikes can be hired on site, and on a clear day the view east reaches the Clwydian hills and the sea near Prestatyn.
On the water, Llyn Brenig is a fly fishery stocked with rainbow trout, with pike fishing in winter, and in 1990 it was the only Welsh reservoir used for the World Fly Fishing Championships. Kayaking, sailing and summer open-water swimming are allowed too. Ospreys can be watched from a bird hide between April and August, highland cattle graze parts of the estate, and red squirrels live here and in nearby Clocaenog Forest. The nearest town, Denbigh, is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) to the north-east.

What can you see on the Llyn Brenig Nest Box Webcam?
A black and white view inside a wooden nest box, facing an entrance passage with daylight at its end, above a floor of sandy material and small stones. It looks like one of the chambers in the reservoir’s sand martin hotel, although the operator does not label the stream.
Why is the Llyn Brenig Nest Box Webcam empty?
Because of the season. Sand martins, the likeliest occupants, arrive from mid-March to mid-April, lay eggs in late May or early June and leave between late July and September. From October to March an empty box is normal, and the stream keeps running.
Is this the Llyn Brenig osprey webcam?
No. The ospreys’ nest has its own camera on the same Llyn Brenig channel, streamed 24 hours a day during the breeding season, and the birds are at the reservoir from April to August. The rest of the year they spend in West Africa, a journey you can follow on our bird migration map.
What is the weather like at Llyn Brenig?
Cool, wet and often windy. Winter highs average around 5 C (41 F) with occasional snow, summer highs reach about 17 C (63 F), and roughly 1,100 millimeters (43 inches) of rain falls in a year.
How long is the walk around Llyn Brenig?
The Brenig trail around the whole lake is 15 kilometers (9.5 miles), about four hours on foot by the operator’s estimate. Trail maps are available at the visitor centre.
Is Llyn Brenig open all year?
Yes. Welsh Water runs it as a visitor site that is open all year round and free to enter. Mobile phone coverage is poor on all networks in the area.
