About this webcam
The Deadwood Webcam looks across Main Street into Outlaw Square, the open-air plaza in the middle of historic downtown Deadwood, South Dakota. The covered stage with its Outlaw Square sign stands at the back of the square, a lawn and a gazebo with a dark shingled roof fill the middle, and the brick pavement of Main Street runs along the bottom of the frame. The building on the right carries the Silverado sign, and a forested Black Hills ridge rises behind the whole scene. The square changes with the calendar: concerts and crowds on summer evenings, a synthetic skating rink in the colder months, and snow on the roofs after a winter storm. Three more tabs add a second Main Street camera and two cameras at Terry Peak Ski Area, up in the hills above the neighboring town of Lead.
About Deadwood
Deadwood sits in a narrow gulch in the northern Black Hills at an elevation of 1,437 meters (4,715 feet). It is the county seat of Lawrence County and had 1,156 residents at the 2020 census, a fraction of the 25,000 people who poured in after gold was found here in 1876. Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead in a Deadwood saloon on August 2 of that year, and he lies in Mount Moriah Cemetery above town alongside Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock.
The whole town was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1961. In 1989 Deadwood became the first small community in the United States to legalize casino gaming as a way to pay for preserving its historic buildings, which is why so many of the brick storefronts along Main Street now hold casinos, hotels and restaurants.
Outlaw Square, the plaza in front of the camera, stands at 703 Main Street on the corner of Deadwood Street. The site held Deadwood’s City Hall and the Deadwood Theater until both burned in 1952. Construction of the square began in January 2019 and it opened in December of the same year, built to give the town back the kind of public gathering place it had in its early days. The camera is hosted by the Historic Franklin Hotel.
Weather and Climate in Deadwood
Deadwood has a four-season mountain climate with cold, snowy winters. January averages a high of 3 C (38 F) and a low of minus 10 C (14 F), and the town collects around 257 centimeters (101 inches) of snow in a typical year. On the camera, a fresh snowfall whitens the gazebo roof, the stage canopy and the hillside behind, and the square’s synthetic rink becomes the busiest part of the frame. Snowstorms can blow through quickly, so the scene can go from clear to white within a single afternoon.
Summers are warm without being hot. July averages a high of 28 C (83 F) and a low of 13 C (56 F), and the evenings stay cool enough for outdoor concerts on the square. Annual precipitation runs to about 754 millimeters (29.75 inches). Spring tends to bring wet snow and rain before the lawn greens up, while autumn brings crisp, clear days and the first snow on the ridges, usually before the town itself turns white.
Things to Do Near Deadwood
Outlaw Square itself runs a year-round program of concerts, history presentations, movie nights, craft fairs and holiday events, with ice skating and ice bumper cars on its synthetic rink in the colder months. A short climb above downtown, Mount Moriah Cemetery holds the graves of Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock. Deadwood is also the northern end of the George S. Mickelson Trail, a rail-trail that runs south through the Black Hills to Edgemont and is popular with cyclists and hikers.
The neighboring town of Lead grew around the Homestake Mine, established in October 1877, which became the longest continuously operating gold mine in the United States. Terry Peak, shown on two of this page’s tabs, rises to 2,153 meters (7,064 feet) about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Lead, with 30 runs and four chairlifts. Spearfish Canyon to the north is known for rock climbing, and Sheridan Lake offers fishing and swimming. Sturgis is 21.6 kilometers (13.4 miles) away, about 18 minutes by car, Rapid City is 68 kilometers (42 miles) away, and Mount Rushmore is a drive of about 77 kilometers (48 miles).
