About this webcam
The Aberdeen South Dakota Webcam looks north from a high mount beside a set of turf sports fields on the south side of Aberdeen, across a residential street and over the treetops of the city’s older neighborhoods. Aluminum bleachers and the corner of a soccer field fill the bottom of the frame, two tall floodlight poles stand at either side, and a row of single-story homes with driveways and parked pickups lines the street beyond the fence. Above them is the real subject: a deep band of mature trees running out to a dead-flat horizon, and a sky that takes up more than half the picture. On the open plains of northeastern South Dakota, cloud banks and storm fronts show up a long way off, so the camera works as a weather window as much as a street view. In mid-October the canopy turns yellow and orange.
About Aberdeen, South Dakota
Aberdeen is the third largest city in South Dakota, with 28,495 residents at the 2020 census, and the seat of Brown County. It sits at about 396 meters (1,299 feet) in the James River valley, roughly 18 kilometers (11 miles) west of the river itself, and Moccasin Creek runs through the middle of town. The Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad founded the city on July 6, 1881, and named it after Aberdeen, Scotland, the birthplace of railroad official Alexander Mitchell. Railroad tracks converging on the young town earned it the nickname Hub City of the Dakotas.
The camera is part of the KELOLAND LiveCam network of weather cameras spread across South Dakota, and the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce carries the feed on its website. Neither names the exact mount, but matching the frame against street maps places it beside the athletic and recreation fields of Northern State University, looking north across 12th Avenue Southeast. Northern State was founded in 1901, and its campus fills much of this side of the city, with Wolves football played at Dacotah Bank Stadium about 450 meters (a quarter mile) southwest of the camera.
The city’s best known former resident is L. Frank Baum, who lived in Aberdeen from 1888 to 1891, years before he wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Aberdeen has kept the connection alive with an Oz section in its children’s park.

In winter the trees across the middle of the frame go bare, which can open up more of the rooftops and side streets behind them, and snow can blanket the field, the street and the lawns. Spring warms quickly, with April afternoons averaging about 12 C (54 F), though nights can still dip close to freezing. July averages 29.4 C (84.9 F) by day and 15.4 C (59.7 F) at night, and the all-time high of 46 C (115 F) came in July 1936. The city sees about 554 millimeters (21.8 inches) of precipitation a year, and with a horizon this flat, approaching storm clouds are visible well before they arrive. October highs average about 14 C (58 F), the month when the canopy here changes color before the leaves drop.
