About this webcam

The Los Muertos Pier Webcam looks north along Los Muertos Beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, from the beachfront at El Dorado Restaurant in the Romantic Zone. Wet sand fills the foreground, edged by wrought-iron lamp posts hung with woven lanterns and pots of white flowers. On the right, the pier’s walkway curves out to its tall sail-shaped spire, while small boats ride at anchor in Banderas Bay beyond the surf. The mountains on the far side of the bay line the horizon. The scene changes through the day as boats come and go from the pier, walkers follow the waterline and the afternoon light moves across the bay toward sunset. El Dorado streams it around the clock.

About Los Muertos Pier

Los Muertos Pier reaches out from Playa de los Muertos, the main beach of Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone and often described as the most popular beach in the city. The current pier opened in 2013, replacing an older wooden one, and was designed by the architect Jose de Jesus Torres Vega. Its central metal structure curves up like the sail of a ship about to set out across the bay, and the deck runs 103 meters (337 feet) out to sea. The design won Torres Vega a Jalisco state award at the Bienal de Arquitectura, and the spire has since become one of the city’s symbols.

It is a working landing as well as a landmark. Pangas, the small open boats that serve as water taxis here, tie up at the pier for trips to the beaches on the south shore of Banderas Bay, among them Las Animas, Quimixto, Majahuitas and Yelapa. The camera sits at El Dorado, a restaurant and beach club open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a short way south of the pier. From that spot the open bay fills the left of the frame and the curve of the beach leads the eye right to the pier, with taller buildings farther up the shore just visible behind it.

The name translates as Beach of the Dead. Local stories give two explanations: one says pirates ambushed mule drivers here as they carried silver down from the mountains, the other that the area once held a burial ground of the region’s indigenous people. Neither has been settled, and the name has stuck. The municipality of Puerto Vallarta had 291,893 residents at the 2020 census.

Weather and Climate in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a tropical climate with a long dry season and a shorter, wetter summer. January highs average about 27 C (80 F), with nights near 17 C (62 F), and April is only slightly warmer at 28 C (82 F) by day. Winter and spring tend to bring the clearest pictures on camera, with blue sky over the bay and the far shore sharp on the horizon. Winter is also the season when humpback whales come into Banderas Bay to give birth.

Summer brings heat and rain. July averages 32 C (90 F) by day and 25 C (77 F) at night, and the rainy season runs from June through October, with the heaviest falls from July to September. September is the wettest month, with about 370 millimeters (14.6 inches) of the city’s 1,392 millimeters (54.8 inches) a year, and the showers usually come as short tropical downpours that leave the hills behind the beach green. The eastern Pacific hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30 and peaks from July through September. October stays hot, with highs near 32 C (89 F) and nights around 24 C (75 F), as the rain eases off toward the dry months.

Things to Do Near Los Muertos Pier

Walk north from the pier and you reach the Malecon, Puerto Vallarta’s paved walkway along the seashore. Isla Cuale, an island in the Cuale River, is on the way, with its markets and cultural sites. Farther in, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe stands in Colonia Centro, and it was damaged in an earthquake in 1995.

The water is the other way to spend a day, and a direct boat leaves Los Muertos Pier for Yelapa every day. About 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of the city, the rocks of Los Arcos stand offshore of Mismaloya, the village where the 1963 film The Night of the Iguana was shot on location. From December to March, whale watching tours head out into Banderas Bay to look for the humpbacks.
