About this webcam
The Texarkana Train Webcam looks out over the Union Pacific tracks beside Texarkana Union Station, the depot that sits on the Arkansas-Texas state line between the twin cities of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Texarkana, Texas. Virtual Railfan installed it at the Historic 1894 building on Front Street. It is a pan-tilt-zoom camera, so the picture moves between positions. Turned toward the yard, it looks across the main line to tracks lined with tank cars, graffiti-covered boxcars and covered hoppers, with a wooded rise behind. A long covered carport and a parking lot fill the foreground. The operator counts about 35 Union Pacific and BNSF freight trains a day here, plus two daily Amtrak Texas Eagle trains calling at the station next door.
About the Texarkana Train Webcam and Union Station
Texarkana was founded at a railroad intersection on December 8, 1873, and the tracks still run through the middle of it. Texarkana Union Station, at 100 East Front Street, was built in 1928 and opened on April 17, 1930. Missouri Pacific’s chief architect, E. M. Tucker, designed it with A. B. Butterworth in the Renaissance Revival style for a trust formed by the Missouri Pacific, Texas and Pacific, Cotton Belt and Kansas City Southern railroads. The state line cuts straight through the building: the waiting room and ticket office are in Arkansas, the western part in Texas. Congress had required back in 1876 that the Texarkana station straddle the line. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and handled 7,037 Amtrak passengers in fiscal 2025, which makes it the second busiest Amtrak station in Arkansas.
According to Virtual Railfan, the tracks closest to the camera are the double main of Union Pacific’s Little Rock Subdivision, the former Missouri Pacific, running past the depot. The main and siding of the Pine Bluff Subdivision, the old Cotton Belt, lie at the back of the yard. Union Pacific uses directional running here: eastbound and northbound freights head for Little Rock after arriving from Big Sandy, Palestine or Shreveport, while westbound trains return toward Big Sandy on the Pine Bluff Subdivision. BNSF manifest trains run on trackage rights, and empty BNSF coal trains occasionally use the Texas Northeastern Railroad yard connection to reach CPKC, whose Shreveport Subdivision is out of view to the west. Scanner listeners can follow the Union Pacific road channels for the Pine Bluff and Shreveport Subdivisions on 160.515 MHz (AAR channel 27) and 161.550 MHz (AAR channel 96).
The camera’s host, the Ritchie Grocery Building, at the corner of Front and Olive Streets, went up in 1894 for Francis Mullins, owner of the Texas Produce Company, and it is the only surviving Romanesque Revival building in downtown Texarkana. Listed on the National Register in 1990, it was bought in 2017 and rebranded as the 1894 City Market, now The Historic 1894, with an art gallery, event rooms and loft apartments. It overlooks the Alley Cats Coffee Bar, which serves from the Concho, a former Santa Fe 27-seat club-lounge-dorm car built by Pullman-Standard in 1940. Texarkana, Arkansas, had 29,387 residents at the 2020 census, and the city sits about 109 meters (358 feet) above sea level.
Weather and Climate in Texarkana
Texarkana has a humid subtropical climate, and summer is the long, hot season. July afternoons average 93 F (34 C) at the city’s airport, with nights near 72 F (22 C). The area gets about 1,241 millimeters (48.9 inches) of rain a year. In early October the wooded rise behind the tracks was still fully green, and it is likely to look barer once the leaves fall.
Spring and fall are the mildest seasons, with April highs around 75 F (24 C) and October highs around 76 F (24 C), and nights in the low 50s F (about 12 C). In winter, January averages a high of 54 F (12 C) and a low of 35 F (2 C), so frosty mornings are part of the season. These figures are 1991 to 2020 NOAA normals for Webb Field, the Texarkana airport.
Things to Do Near Texarkana Union Station
Up State Line Avenue from the station, Photographer’s Island sits in front of the federal building and post office, built in 1932 and 1933 and the only federal office building to straddle a state line. It is the place to pose for a photo with one foot in Arkansas and the other in Texas. The Museum of Regional History at 219 North State Line Avenue covers the area’s past and houses the visitor center for the Texarkana Arts and Historic District.
The Ace of Clubs House at 420 Pine Street is an 1885 Italianate Victorian home with 22 sides, laid out in the shape of the ace of clubs and reportedly paid for with poker winnings. The Perot Theatre, a downtown landmark since 1924 and restored by the City of Texarkana, Texas, hosts Texarkana Symphony Orchestra concerts and touring shows. Ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who attended the Orr School in Texarkana, is honored by a large mural on the south wall of 311 Main Street that traces his life and work. Back at the camera’s own building, The Gallery at 1894 shows art, and the building also has event venues and a speakeasy.
