Times Square, New York

These live webcams show the vibrant signage in Times Square, New York, USA.

Times Square was named in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to One Times Square.

In 1917, the first large electric sign appeared on the facade of the Times Tower, heralding the era of electric advertising in Times Square.

During the 1920s to the 1960s, Times Square became known for its spectacular neon displays, including the famous Camel cigarette sign, which featured a man blowing smoke rings. In 1976, the first digital billboard appeared in Times Square, created by Artkraft Strauss for the Bond Clothing Store, marking the beginning of the transition from neon to digital displays.

During the 1980s and 1990s, more and more businesses began adopting the new technology for its dynamic and eye-catching capabilities. In the first decades of the 21st century, high-definition LED displays began to appear, with much larger displays, some reaching as big as 18,000 square feet (1,672 square meters).

In recent years, billboards have started using augmented reality (AR) for a more immersive experience.
