Eger Webcam – Watch Dobo Square and the Minorite Church

The Eger Webcam looks along Dobo Square, the long main square of the baroque old town of Eger in northern Hungary. The twin towers of the Minorite Church of St Anthony of Padua rise on the right of the frame, with the ornate City Hall closer to the camera, flying the Hungarian flag. Straight ahead the paving runs toward the Eger stream, and above the red roofs on the left the stone walls of Eger Castle climb the hill where Hungarian defenders held out against an Ottoman army in 1552. The City of Eger runs the camera on its own YouTube channel. Early mornings are quiet, with a few people crossing the open square, while town events can fill the same space with rows of stalls and white tents. In autumn the trees along the left edge turn yellow and orange.

About Eger and Dobo Square

Eger sits on the Eger stream in the hills between the Matra and Bukk mountains, 165 meters (541 feet) above sea level, and counted about 49,000 residents at the 2022 census. King Stephen founded a bishopric here in 1009, and Pope Pius VII raised it to an archdiocese in 1804.

The square takes its name from Istvan Dobo, the captain who commanded Eger Castle in the siege of 1552. Between 2,100 and 2,300 defenders held the walls against an Ottoman army of 35,000 to 40,000 men, and about 1,700 of them survived. The town fell to the Ottomans in 1596 all the same, and stayed under their rule for 91 years until it was freed in December 1687. A statue of Dobo by the sculptor Alajos Strobl has stood on the square since 1907.

The Minorite Church stands on the southeast side of the square. Its design is credited to the Bohemian baroque architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, it was consecrated in 1771, and work on the interior went on until 1792. The high altar painting is by Johann Lukas Kracker. Minorite friars had been in Eger since the 13th century. The City Hall stands next door at number 2, and the Eger stream forms the northeast edge of the square, with a strip on the far bank known locally as little Dobo Square.

Weather and Climate in Eger

Eger has warm summers and cold winters. On the 1991 to 2020 averages, July brings highs of 27.6°C (82°F) and lows of 15.8°C (60°F), while January averages 2.4°C (36°F) by day and minus 3.5°C (26°F) at night, so snow on the square is possible in midwinter. Spring and autumn mirror each other: April averages highs of 17.2°C (63°F) and lows of 6.5°C (44°F), and October 15.9°C (61°F) and 6.7°C (44°F). Precipitation is modest, at about 583 mm (23 inches) a year.

The camera shows the seasons mostly through the trees on the left side of the square, bare in winter, green by late spring and yellow in October. On clear days the castle walls stand out sharply on the hill behind the rooftops. In haze or fog that background fades first, while the church and City Hall stay sharp in the foreground.

Things to Do Near Eger

Eger Castle is a short walk from the square, across the stream and up the hill to the northeast. Inside the walls are the Dobo Istvan Castle Museum on the castle’s history, the Eger Picture Gallery, a wax museum and the casemates, a system of underground passages. Back in town, the Minaret is 40 meters (131 feet) tall, the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe and one of only three left in Hungary, and you can climb it for a view over the center. The Basilica was built from 1831 to 1837 to designs by Jozsef Hild.

Across from the Basilica, the Lyceum (built 1765 to 1785) has a camera obscura at the top of the building that projects live images of the town onto a table, a view of Eger two centuries older than any webcam. For wine, the Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szepasszonyvolgy) is known for its cellars and red wines, among them Egri Bikaver, known in English as Bull’s Blood of Eger. The town also has thermal baths with an Olympic-size pool and a Turkish bath from the Ottoman period, and the Bukk mountains have hiking trails close to town.
