About this webcam

The Budapest Webcam looks north up the Danube from the roof of Hotel Victoria on the Buda bank, with the Hungarian Parliament Building standing across the river on the right side of the frame. The Buda embankment runs down the left edge, a tree-lined road with zebra crossings and a steady flow of cars, taxis and buses, while river cruisers and sightseeing boats tie up at the moorings below it. Margaret Bridge crosses the river in the distance. By day boats cut wakes across the water in both directions. After dark the Parliament is floodlit in gold and its reflection stretches across the river, which is the view most people come to this camera for.

About the View from Hotel Victoria

Hotel Victoria stands at Bem rakpart 11 in Budapest’s first district, in the Vizivaros neighborhood between Castle Hill and the river. The Chain Bridge is a five minute walk to the south and Matthias Church a ten minute walk up the hill. The whole scene lies inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Budapest, including the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrassy Avenue”, first listed in 1987. Budapest itself had 1,675,777 residents on January 1, 2026, according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.

The Hungarian Parliament Building is the reason this view is famous. Designed by Imre Steindl, it was begun in 1885, inaugurated in 1896 for the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian state and completed in 1904. It is 268 meters (879 feet) long and 123 meters (404 feet) wide, its dome rises 96 meters (315 feet), and it holds 691 rooms. It has been the largest building in Hungary since the day it was finished.

Two other landmarks frame the shot. The red brick spire at the far left edge belongs to the Szilagyi Dezso Square Reformed Church, a neo-Gothic church by Samu Pecz with a 62 meter (203 foot) tower and a roof of glazed Zsolnay tiles, consecrated in 1896. Upriver, Margaret Bridge links Buda and Pest to the southern tip of Margaret Island. It was designed by the French engineer Ernest Gouin, opened on April 30, 1876, and is 607.6 meters (1,993 feet) long.

Weather and Climate in Budapest

Budapest has cold winters and warm summers. HungaroMet’s 1991 to 2020 normals put January at an average high of 3.0 C (37.4 F) and a low of minus 2.5 C (27.5 F), and in a cold snap the camera shows bare trees along the embankment, frost on the quays and ice floes drifting past Parliament. July averages a high of 28.1 C (82.6 F) and a low of 16.7 C (62.1 F). The city gets about 586 millimeters (23.1 inches) of rain and snow a year, and July is the wettest month.

The Danube itself changes more than the weather does. When the river rises, the lower quays on both banks flood first: the lower embankment sits at 645 centimeters (21.2 feet) on the Vigado ter gauge and has to close from the first flood alert level. The record is 891 centimeters (29.2 feet), reached on the evening of June 9, 2013. In September 2024 the river peaked at 830 centimeters (27.2 feet), both embankments closed to traffic and the water covered the lower road in front of Parliament.

Things to Do Near the Budapest Webcam

On the Buda side, Batthyany ter, a short walk north of the hotel, sits directly opposite Parliament and is the classic spot to photograph it. It is also a stop on metro line M2 and the terminus of the H5 suburban railway to Szentendre. To the south, the Castle Hill Funicular has climbed 51 meters (167 feet) from Clark Adam ter since 1870. At the top are Buda Castle, home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, and Matthias Church, where Franz Joseph was crowned King of Hungary in 1867. Next to it, Frigyes Schulek’s Fisherman’s Bastion (1895 to 1902) has seven towers, one for each of the seven Magyar chieftains. For a Turkish bath, go to the Rudas Baths below Gellert Hill, with an Ottoman dome over an octagonal pool, since the closer Kiraly Baths have been closed for renovation since March 2020.

Across the river, guided tours of Parliament leave from the visitor center on Kossuth Lajos ter. About 300 meters (984 feet) south of the building, the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, 60 pairs of iron shoes created by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer in 2005, remembers the Jews shot into the river in 1944 and 1945. Tram 2 follows the Pest riverbank past Parliament and is one of the cheapest ways to sightsee in the city. From Margaret Bridge you can walk onto Margaret Island, 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) of park in the middle of the Danube. Further south, the Great Market Hall (1897), another Samu Pecz design, is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest.
