About this webcam

The Golden Bay Webcam looks across Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa, the sandy beach on Malta’s northwest coast better known as Golden Bay. The camera stands at the back of the beach above a fenced strip of dune and faces out over the sand to the sea, with a lifeguard tower in the middle of the frame, boats at anchor in the bay and a rocky headland on the left. It was put up to count people rather than to sell holidays, so a running visitor total sits at the top of the picture. Early in the day the sand often carries the curving tracks of a beach cleaner. Later the count climbs as the beach fills, and because the bay faces almost due west, clear evenings end with the sun going down over the water in front of the camera.

About Golden Bay

Golden Bay lies in the Manikata area of Mellieha, about a 25-minute drive from Valletta. The beach is roughly 200 meters (656 feet) long, backed by clay slopes, boulder scree and garrigue, and the operator describes it as the second most visited sandy beach in the Maltese Islands. The whole bay falls within a Special Area of Conservation, the sand, dunes and valley behind it are scheduled as an Area of Ecological Importance, and the bay has had its own Natura 2000 management plan since 2015.

The ground in the foreground of the shot is dune under restoration. Golden Bay keeps the remains of an embryonic shifting dune about 90 meters (295 feet) back from the sea, and dunes are rare in Malta, where only five complete sand dune systems survive. A dense stand of giant cane at the mouth of the old valley was cleared over three years, and the dune has been cordoned off so it can recover. Sea daffodil, sea fennel, yellow horned poppy and sea medick grow on the beach slopes, with tamarisk and agave higher up.

The camera belongs to TOURISMO, an Interreg Euro-MED project on managing tourist flows, and Golden Bay is one of its eight Mediterranean pilot sites. The Malta Regional Development and Dialogue Foundation runs a five-year counting program here together with Majjistral Nature and History Park, which manages the bay. People-counting CCTV and deep-learning software record pedestrian and vehicle traffic to measure crowd density, movement and peak times, and the findings feed into the Natura 2000 plan. The park was declared a national park in 2007 and protects 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of coast between Golden Bay and Anchor Bay.

Weather and Climate in Golden Bay

Summers are hot and almost dry. Malta’s long-term records, kept at Luqa, put August highs at 32 C (90 F) and lows at 23 C (73 F), and July brings next to no rain. The sea peaks at close to 26 C (78 F) in August, and autumn stays warm, with October averaging 25 C (77 F) by day and 18 C (65 F) at night. Summer is when the visitor count typically climbs fastest.

Winter is mild and wetter. January averages 16 C (60 F) by day and 10 C (50 F) at night, and most of the roughly 600 mm (24 inches) of annual rain falls between autumn and early spring, with November and December the wettest months at just over 90 mm (3.5 inches) each. The sea cools to about 15 C (59 F) by February and March, and December gives only 9.8 hours of daylight, against 14.5 in June. Spring warms quickly, with April highs of 20 C (68 F) and lows near 13 C (55 F). Outside summer the count rises far more slowly, and on a winter weekday the sand can stay close to empty for hours.

Things to Do Near Golden Bay

The shortest walk starts at the south end of the beach, where a path climbs the headland to Ghajn Tuffieha Tower, a watchtower built by the Knights of St John in 1637. The coast path carries on south to Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, also called Riviera Bay, about 15 minutes on foot from Golden Bay and reached by roughly 200 steep steps. Gnejna Bay lies around 20 minutes further south. On Golden Bay itself, a water sports kiosk rents kayaks and jet skis in summer, and umbrellas and sunbeds are for hire on the sand.

North of the beach, Majjistral Nature and History Park takes in cliffs, garrigue and farmland as far as Anchor Bay. Entry is free all year, and its paths pass cart ruts, wartime pillboxes, corbelled stone huts, Punic rock-cut tombs and Ghajn Znuber Tower. Popeye Village sits on Anchor Bay, a 10-minute drive north of Golden Bay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Golden Bay in Malta?

What can you see on the Golden Bay Webcam?

The camera looks from the back of the beach over a fenced strip of recovering dune, across the sand and the lifeguard tower, to the sea and the boats anchored in the bay. A running visitor count sits at the top of the picture, the date and time in the top right corner, and the project’s sponsor logos along the bottom.

Why does the Golden Bay Webcam show a visitor count?

The count comes from TOURISMO, an EU-funded project studying tourist flows around the Mediterranean. People-counting software logs arrivals so the beach’s managers can see how busy it gets and plan around the protected dunes. The figure is a total for the day and resets automatically once a day, so a low number early on is normal.

What is the weather like at Golden Bay?

Hot and dry in summer, with August highs around 32 C (90 F), and mild in winter, with January highs near 16 C (60 F). The sea ranges from about 15 C (59 F) in late winter to nearly 26 C (78 F) in August.

Is Golden Bay good for swimming?

Golden Bay is a sandy Blue Flag beach, and lifeguards are typically on duty from 9am to 6pm in summer, when the sea is at its warmest.
