About this webcam

The Deeside Golf Club Webcam looks out from the clubhouse terrace at Bieldside, on the western edge of Aberdeen, across the closing green of the Haughton Course. A brick-paved terrace and a stone wall lined with shrubs fill the foreground. Beyond them, a large green ringed by sand bunkers sits in the middle of the frame, with a pond and fountain to the right, mown fairways running back between tall conifers, and a wooded ridge on the horizon. Golfers with trolleys cross the scene through the day. The broadleaf trees around the course turn gold and copper in October, and on clear autumn afternoons long shadows from the conifers stretch across the fairways towards the camera. The club describes the view as looking over the 1st and 18th greens towards the Deeside scenery.

About Deeside Golf Club

Deeside Golf Club sits on the north bank of the River Dee at Bieldside, about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west-southwest of the center of Aberdeen in a straight line. The club takes its name from the valley that climbs west from the city into the hill country of Braemar and Balmoral, the stretch often called Royal Deeside. It was formally inaugurated in March 1903, after a public meeting on November 24, 1902, opened a nine-hole course on September 3, 1903, and had extended it to 18 holes within twelve months.

Two courses share the ground today. The Haughton Course, the main 18, measures about 5,850 meters (6,400 yards) from the black tees, with six sets of tees, and runs down beside the river, which comes into play on several holes around the middle of the round. The Blairs Course is a nine-hole layout completed in June 1984 on land acquired from West Cults Farm, and it takes in many of the old holes from the original Haughton routing. A redesign costing 600,000 pounds, approved in 1995, reshaped both courses so that each starts and finishes near the clubhouse.

The green in front of the camera matches the club’s own notes on the 18th, a hole called Doctor: a par 4 or 5 of 418 meters (457 yards) from the back tees, with a large green well protected by bunkers and a pond waiting short left. Players approach towards the clubhouse, so on screen that pond sits to the right of the green. The round opens close by at the 1st, called Corner, a par 3 of 173 meters (189 yards) played from a high, raised tee. The clubhouse behind the camera opened on December 15, 2004, and a practice range with eight bays followed on April 3, 2009.

Weather and Climate at Deeside Golf Club

The Met Office station at Dyce, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of the course, gives a fair picture of the local weather. January averages a high of 6.8 C (44 F) and a low of 1.0 C (34 F), and the station logs around 34 days with snow a year. Spring warms slowly, with April highs of 11.2 C (52 F) and lows near 3.9 C (39 F). July is the warmest month at 18.5 C (65 F) by day and 11.0 C (52 F) at night. October still averages 12.6 C (55 F). The station records about 833 mm (32.8 inches) of rain and roughly 1,447 hours of sunshine a year.

Daylight is the bigger variable at 57 degrees north. Around the winter solstice Aberdeen gets only 6 hours and 41 minutes between sunrise and sunset, so the Deeside Golf Club Webcam spends most of a December day in low, slanting light. Around the summer solstice the gap stretches to 17 hours and 55 minutes, and nautical twilight lasts through the night, so the sky over the course never fully darkens and the fairways stay visible on camera late into the evening.

Things to Do Near Deeside Golf Club

The club takes visitor bookings, and the shorter Blairs Course suits anyone with time for only nine holes. Off the course, the Deeside Way passes right through Bieldside. This 71 kilometer (44 mile) path follows the disused Deeside railway line from Aberdeen to Ballater, and the remains of old stations can still be seen at Bieldside, Cults and Pitfodels Halt. Walk east along it to Cults for Allan Park, a sunken garden reached by steep steps a short distance from Cults Station, with ponds and trees.

Head west instead and the valley opens up. Drum Castle, near Drumoak about 16 kilometers (10 miles) west of Aberdeen, was home to a single family, the Irvines, for 653 years. You can climb its medieval tower for views over Deeside, tour the Jacobean rooms and library, walk the Walled Garden of Historic Roses, and follow waymarked trails through the Old Wood of Drum, a remnant of ancient oak forest.
