About this webcam

The Linlithgow Canal Basin Webcam looks down on the stone quay at Manse Road Basin on the Union Canal, where the Linlithgow Union Canal Society keeps its trip boats. The red-and-white Saint Michael often fills the foreground, with “Union Canal Society” painted along its side, and the society’s red boat Victoria can sit further along the quay. Benches, a black bollard and an information board with a map of the canal stand on the paved edge, and ducks paddle through the reflections on the flat water. The camera can be turned to look around the canal centre, so the framing may change. It shows the basin as the volunteers see it: quiet on a weekday morning, often busy with passengers boarding on summer weekend afternoons, and in use again for the Santa Cruises in December.

About Linlithgow Canal Basin

Manse Road Basin lies on the south side of Linlithgow, a royal burgh in West Lothian with a population of 12,517 in 2022. The basin is home to the Linlithgow Canal Centre, which is run entirely by volunteers from the Linlithgow Union Canal Society, known as LUCS. The society was founded in 1975 to clear the canal towpath for public use, and in 1977 it opened a museum in the old stables building beside the basin. It is the only museum in Scotland dedicated to canal life, with photographs, documents, boat models and tools, and a tearoom sits next to it.

The Union Canal opened in 1822 and runs 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Lochrin Basin in Edinburgh to Falkirk. It was built as a contour canal, holding a level of 73 meters (240 feet) above sea level the whole way, so there are no locks between the city and Falkirk. Commercial traffic ended in 1933 and the canal was formally closed to navigation in 1965. It reopened in 2001, and since the Falkirk Wheel opened in 2002, boats from Linlithgow can reach the Forth and Clyde Canal.

The society’s fleet works from this quay. Victoria, its flagship, arrived in 1978 and carries 12 passengers. Saint Magdalene joined in 1995, and Saint Michael was built for the society; both seat 40, or 36 with a catering table fitted. Leamington, a 12-seat self-drive boat, has been operated on behalf of Scottish Canals since 2003. The first webcam here went up in 2005, funded by the Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Town Management Group and installed by LUCS and Pride and Passion Linlithgow. The society paid for a new camera in May 2026, and the current stream started that month.

Weather and Climate in Linlithgow

Linlithgow has the mild, damp climate of central Scotland. Ten years of Open-Meteo reanalysis for the basin put January highs at about 6 C (43 F) and overnight lows near 2 C (35 F), close to the 6.6 C (44 F) January average high recorded by the Met Office at Edinburgh Gogarbank. Rain is spread across the whole year, with no reliably dry month. Winter days are short at this latitude: around the December solstice the sun is up for only about 7 hours, so the camera gets full daylight only for a few hours either side of midday.

Spring warms slowly, with April highs around 11 C (52 F), and the society’s trip season opens in early April. July and August bring highs of about 18 C (64 to 65 F) and lows near 11 C (52 F). Around the June solstice the sun is up for roughly 17.5 hours, so the basin stays light late into the evening. September still averages about 16 C (61 F) by day, and October cools to around 12 C (55 F).

Things to Do Near Linlithgow Canal Basin

The boats in the frame are the easiest way onto the water. In the 2026 season LUCS ran 25-minute town trips on weekends from 4 April to 27 September, and on weekdays from late June to early August, with no booking needed. Its 40-seat boats also make a cruise of about two and a half hours to the Avon Aqueduct, which is 250 meters (810 feet) long and the second-longest aqueduct in the UK, and a few summer dates bring a six-hour cruise to the Falkirk Wheel. Public trips have finished for 2026, but charters and self-drive hire carry on, and Santa Cruises run on two December weekends.

The town centre lies just north of the canal. Linlithgow Palace, now a roofless ruin, was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, in December 1542, and shares a peninsula on Linlithgow Loch with the Peel, a public park that wraps around the shore. St Michael’s Parish Church, one of the largest burgh churches in the Church of Scotland, was consecrated in 1242, and most of the present building dates from the 15th century. Visit West Lothian publishes a 13.5 kilometer (8.5 mile) Linlithgow Loch walk that starts and finishes at the canal basin on Manse Road and takes about four hours. The canal society is also listed as a stop on the John Muir Way.
