About this webcam

The Borgie Lodge Webcam looks straight at the front of the Borgie Lodge Hotel, a white former hunting lodge in the glen of the River Borgie on the north coast of Sutherland. The painted gable with the hotel’s sign fills the middle of the frame, with a covered porch and bench to its left and timber-framed bays to its right. A wide tarmac forecourt runs across the foreground and often shines after a shower, a lawn opens out on the left, and tall trees close in on both sides. The scene changes with the light and the season: flat and grey under heavy cloud, then sharp when the sun breaks through and throws tree shadows across the drive. In mid October the leaves around the lodge turn yellow and orange.

About Borgie Lodge

Borgie is a hamlet in Sutherland, in the Highland council area, about 12.2 kilometers (7.6 miles) northeast of Tongue and 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) south of Torrisdale on the coast. The lodge stands roughly 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) northeast of Borgie Bridge, where the A836 crosses the river. Thurso is 59.2 kilometers (36.8 miles) away by road.

Highland Council’s historic environment record dates the building to between 1878 and 1905 and lists it as a hunting lodge: two storeys, harled, on a T-shaped plan, with chimney stacks at the gable ends, a curved porch in one corner, projecting two-storey timber-clad bays and four-pane sash and case windows. Several of those details show on camera, from the end chimneys to the porch tucked into the angle between the two wings. Sporting estate particulars from 1914, quoted in the record, name the Duke of Sutherland, and the land here was historically part of the 12,600-acre (5,100-hectare) Tongue estate with its shooting rights. The crofting village at Borgie was cleared during the Highland Clearances and resettled in the early 20th century.

Today the lodge is a hotel, and the sign on the gable advertises a restaurant and The Crofters Bar, both open to non-residents. Its painted panel shows an angler casting into a river, which suits the place. The River Borgie begins as the outflow of Loch Slaim and runs about 11 kilometers (7 miles) across blanket bog and through Borgie Forest, past the hamlet, to Torrisdale Bay. It is a salmon river with 50 named pools, and anglers catch and release an average of just under 300 fish a year.

Weather and Climate in Borgie

The sea keeps Borgie’s seasons mild and its extremes small. Over 2016 to 2025, January averaged highs of about 6 C (43 F) and lows near 2 C (36 F), while July and August peaked at around 16 C (61 F) with nights near 11 C (52 F). Spring warms slowly, with April highs close to 10 C (50 F), and October still manages about 11 C (53 F) by day. Rain falls in every month. The wettest stretch runs from September to January, at around 115 to 130 millimeters (4.5 to 5.1 inches) a month, and April and May are the driest, at under 80 millimeters (3.1 inches).

Day length swings hard at 58.5 degrees north. Near the June solstice the sun is up for about 18 hours and 20 minutes and sinks only around 8 degrees below the horizon at midnight, so the sky never turns fully dark. Near the December solstice the day shrinks to about 6 hours and 20 minutes, leaving a short midday window for a sunlit view. Summer brings a full green canopy that crowds the edges of the frame, autumn turns it yellow and copper, and winter strips the branches bare.

Things to Do Near Borgie Lodge

Torrisdale beach is less than a mile from the hotel, according to the lodge, and gives about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of sand on Torrisdale Bay, where the Borgie reaches the Atlantic at the western end and the River Naver at the eastern end. South of the bay, Invernaver National Nature Reserve covers 552 hectares (1,364 acres) of shifting and fixed dunes, fens and heaths, starting about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) southwest of Bettyhill. In Bettyhill itself, the Strathnaver Museum occupies the former parish church with a large upstairs section on Clan Mackay.

Borgie Forest, also less than a mile from the lodge, was replanted in 1942 after a fire and later restored under the Millennium Forest for Scotland project. It divides into Borgie Breco on the west and Borgie Glen on the east, and an uphill path in Borgie Glen climbs to The Unknown, a sculpture by Kenny Hunter standing in a hilltop clearing. Older remains lie close by: the site of Borgie Bridge Broch near the river crossing, and the Coille na Borgie cairns about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the east. Skerray Bay, on the coast nearby, has a small harbour and pier, and the lodge arranges bird watching and surfing experiences for guests.
