Hildesheim Webcam – Watch Two Squares by the Town Hall

The Hildesheim Webcam looks across the Marktplatz, the rebuilt medieval market square at the heart of this Lower Saxony city. The carved timber front of the Knochenhaueramtshaus fills the center of the frame, with the bakers’ guild hall, home to Cafe Engelke, on its left and a row of timber-framed and baroque houses down the right side. About Hildesheim

Hildesheim lies on the Innerste river, a tributary of the Leine, about 34 kilometers (21 miles) southeast of Hanover. The city stands 81 meters (266 feet) above sea level, covers 92.29 square kilometers (35.63 square miles) and had 98,207 residents at the end of 2025. The city dates its founding to 815, when Emperor Louis the Pious established the diocese here. Two of its churches, St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Michael’s Church, have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1985.

The Marktplatz camera came first, in November 2023. The Knochenhaueramtshaus at the center of its frame is the butchers’ guild hall of 1529, which was destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed between 1987 and 1989. Outdoor tables and white parasols spread across the cobbles in front of the guild halls, and on a clear day church towers show above the rooftops behind them.

The Platz An der Lilie camera followed in June 2024. It is mounted on the listed town hall, whose oldest parts date from the 13th century and which was rebuilt in 1954 after partial destruction in 1945, and its housing was color-matched to the building to meet monument protection rules. It looks steeply down on the square: a cafe terrace with green parasols and a small pergola at the top of the frame, young trees along the street on the right and bicycles in the racks along the curb. At the end of September 2026 the square held a photo exhibition on free-standing steel frames. Large black blocks cover parts of the picture, and the city says the stream complies with data protection law. When the camera was switched on, the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung announced it as the new camera over the Hildesheim City Beach, which was set up on the square that summer.

Weather and Climate in Hildesheim

Hildesheim has a mild, damp central European climate. January is the coldest month, with average highs around 3 C (37 F) and nights that drop to about -1 C (30 F), so frost is common on winter mornings and the paving on both squares can turn white after a cold night. July brings average highs around 23 C (73 F), and the outdoor seating on the Marktplatz typically fills on warm afternoons. Autumn shows early on the Hildesheim Webcam: by the end of September the tree in the corner of the Marktplatz view, and those along the street on the Platz An der Lilie tab, were already turning yellow. Spring and early summer bring the longest days, when both squares stay in daylight well into the evening.

Things to Do in Hildesheim

The Marktplatz is the obvious starting point, and the building at the center of the main camera view can be visited from the inside: the Knochenhaueramtshaus houses the Stadtmuseum, the city history museum. Nearby, St. Andrew’s Church has the tallest church tower in Lower Saxony at 114.5 meters (376 feet), and visitors can climb it. The Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum holds natural history collections alongside ancient Egyptian and Peruvian antiquities.

The two UNESCO churches make a short walk from the center. St. Michael’s Church, an early Romanesque building from 1010 to 1022, has a painted wooden ceiling showing the Tree of Jesse, the family tree of Jesus. At St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Thousand-year Rose, a dog rose said to be about 1,000 years old, grows on the wall of the apse, and the Cathedral Museum next door displays liturgical objects and works of art spanning many centuries.
