About this webcam

The Bremen Webcam looks down on the Market Square in the old town of Bremen, Germany, with the carved Renaissance front of the Town Hall filling the right of the frame. Behind it rises the tall, dark spire of the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche), and a row of steep-gabled merchants’ houses lines the left side of the square. The Roland statue stands in front of the Town Hall arcade, small at this distance but easy to find once you know where to look. Bremen’s tourism agency mounted the camera on the Bremen Cotton Exchange building and launched it with two others in July 2024. Those two sit in the tabs above the player: one looks out from the roof of the Weser Stadium, the other up the Weser River over a tram bridge.

About Bremen and Its Market Square

Bremen sits on the Weser about 60 kilometers (37 miles) upstream from the river’s mouth at Bremerhaven, and about 588,000 people live in the city. It became the seat of a bishopric in 787 and joined the Hanseatic League in the 13th century. The Town Hall went up around 1400 as a Gothic building. Between 1608 and 1612 its front was remodeled in the Weser Renaissance style, adding the projecting bay of tall windows and ornate gables that sits in the middle of the facade on camera. In July 2004 UNESCO inscribed the Town Hall and the Roland together as a World Heritage Site, for their architecture and as a record of the city’s civic self-government.

The Roland was erected in 1404, replacing a wooden figure that Prince-Archbishop Albert II had burned in 1366. The stone knight is 5.47 meters (17.9 feet) tall and reaches 10.21 meters (33.5 feet) with its base and canopy. He faces the cathedral on purpose, a symbol of the city’s rights set against the archbishop’s claims. St. Petri Cathedral stands on the east side of the square, just out of the camera’s frame to the right.

The two tabs show more of the city. The Weser Stadium camera sits on the roof of Werder Bremen’s ground, about 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) east of the Market Square. It looks over the solar panels on the stadium roof, the green seats and the pitch, with the Weser curving away toward the old town’s spires on the horizon. The Weser River camera looks upstream over the Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge, where trams, cars and cyclists cross the river, toward the green banks of the Osterdeich.

Weather and Climate in Bremen

Averages from the German Weather Service for 1991 to 2020 put January at 4.6 C (40 F) by day and -0.5 C (31 F) at night, so winter in Bremen hovers around freezing. April afternoons reach about 14.5 C (58 F), with nights near 3.9 C (39 F). July averages 23.6 C (74 F) by day and 12.9 C (55 F) at night, and October falls back to 14 C (57 F) and 6 C (43 F). About 670 millimeters (26.4 inches) of rain and snow fall in a typical year.

Each season looks different from the camera. On a clear winter morning the sun stays low, and the buildings on the right throw long shadows across the square toward the gabled houses. Late October brings the Freimarkt, the city’s fair, held in the last two weeks of the month every year since 1036. During the 2026 fair, on 16 October, the camera showed a red and white striped carousel and a small Ferris wheel in front of the Town Hall, with crowds moving between the stalls and a second Ferris wheel on the skyline.

Things to Do Near Bremen’s Market Square

Most of the old town’s sights lie within a short walk of the camera. The Ratskeller, the cellar tavern beneath the Town Hall, keeps the oldest wine barrel in Germany, made in 1653. Near its entrance on the Town Hall’s west side stands Gerhard Marcks’ bronze of the Town Musicians from 1953, the donkey, dog, cat and rooster of the fairy tale stacked one on another. Bottcherstrasse leads off the south side of the square: 110 meters (361 feet) of brick lane rebuilt between 1923 and 1931, and now one of the city’s most popular streets.

Between the cathedral and the river, the Schnoor quarter keeps a tight knot of crooked lanes lined with fishermen’s and shippers’ houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Schlachte, once Bremen’s medieval harbor, is now a riverside promenade with pubs and bars along one side and the Weser on the other. Near the main station, the Overseas Museum (Ubersee-Museum) covers natural history and ethnography, and Werder Bremen’s home games fill the stadium seen on the Weser Stadium tab.
