About this webcam

The Freising Webcam looks across Marienplatz, the main square of the old town in Freising, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Munich in Upper Bavaria. The town hall fills the left of the frame with its clock gable and a flag on the corner, the Baroque tower of St. George’s Church rises behind it, and the Marian column stands in the middle of the cobbles. A second tab switches to Obere Hauptstrasse, where the reopened Moosach stream runs in an open channel past the town’s war memorial. Both cameras are run by the City of Freising and publish a fresh image once a minute, so the square changes through the day: stalls around the column on green market days and parasols and outdoor tables in fine weather.

About Freising and Its Marienplatz

Freising is the oldest town in Upper Bavaria. Saint Corbinian arrived here in 724, and in 996 Emperor Otto III granted the town its rights, the same year the bishops took over the right to hold markets, mint coins and levy tolls. That market right is the reason the square exists. Until about 1810 Marienplatz was known as Schrannenplatz, a name tied to its role as the town’s regular market. Today Freising has 48,953 residents (end of 2025) and sits at 448 meters (1,470 feet) above sea level.

The town hall on the left of the frame was built in 1904 and 1905 in a style that echoes late medieval and Renaissance civic buildings, and its carillon plays twice a day, at 11:55 a.m. and 4:55 p.m. Behind it, St. George’s Church goes back to a building from around 1250. The present church took shape from 1440, and its Baroque tower followed in 1689, with a viewing platform about 45 meters (148 feet) up, 220 steps from the ground. In the middle of the square, Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund raised the Marian column in 1674, modeled on the one on Munich’s Marienplatz. Four saints kneel at the corners of its pedestal: Corbinian, Sigismund, Francis Xavier and Francis of Assisi. The Bankhaus Ludwig Sperrer, a 1969 building, closes the right edge of the view.

The second camera points along Obere Hauptstrasse. After two and a half years of building work, largely finished by mid-December 2022, the city opened up the Stadtmoosach in four sections across roughly 85 meters (279 feet) between Hirtlederergasse and Bahnhofstrasse, and repaved the street at a single level with natural stone slabs along the facades. The war memorial, an obelisk flanked by lion figures, was moved about 6 meters (20 feet) to the northeast so that it stands in the line of sight down the street, which is the angle this camera takes.

Weather and Climate in Freising

Freising lies on the Isar plain north of Munich, and the weather station at Duernast, just outside the town, records an annual mean temperature of 8.4 C (47.1 F) and about 792 millimeters (31.2 inches) of precipitation a year. January is the coldest month, with a mean of -1.1 C (30 F), so winter images can show frost or snow on the cobbles and the long red roof of St. George’s. July averages 17.9 C (64.2 F) across day and night, and warm days tend to bring out the parasols and outdoor tables that line both views.

Daylight swings widely at 48 degrees north. Around the December solstice the sun is up for only about eight hours, so the square is dark by late afternoon. In late June it stays light for about 16 hours, which gives the longest run of daylight images of the year.

Things to Do Near Freising

The south side of Marienplatz is taken up by the Asam Building, the former lyceum of the prince-bishops, whose Asam Hall carries ceiling frescoes from 1709. The building also houses the City Museum. St. George’s tower opens for climbs on Saturday afternoons from May to October, weather permitting, with set start times at 2:45, 3:25, 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. Twice a week the green market sets up around the Marian column. On nearby Untere Hauptstrasse you can find a market fountain by Josef Moser and a bronze model of the town center at a scale of 1:650, and the Moosach channel passes a monument to the Bavarian actor Karl Obermayr (1931 to 1985).

Above the old town, the Domberg, or cathedral hill, holds Freising Cathedral, which the Asam brothers renovated for the diocese’s 1,000th anniversary in 1724, and the Diocesan Museum, housed in a former seminary built between 1868 and 1870. Since May 2024 the free Dombergbahn lift has run from Bahnhofstrasse up to the museum, giving a step-free route onto the hill. On Weihenstephan Hill stands the former Benedictine abbey founded in 1020, whose brewery is described as the oldest still operating in the world, beside a campus of the Technical University of Munich. Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977 to 1982 and came back to the town on his 2006 visit to Bavaria.
