Cuxhaven Webcam – Watch Duhnen Beach and the Wadden Sea

The Cuxhaven Webcam looks out from the Strandhotel Duhnen over the beach, the promenade and the Wadden Sea, toward the mouth of the Elbe and the island of Neuwerk. It is a pan-tilt-zoom camera that works through a short tour of presets. The widest view looks straight out over rows of yellow and white hooded beach chairs to the open flats. Another follows the beach and the grassy dike toward the Elbe mouth, where a row of wind turbines lines the far shore of the estuary. A third zooms in step by step on Neuwerk until the island’s old tower stands out on the horizon, and one turns inland to Duhnen’s village square. The tide changes the picture most: at low water the sea draws back and leaves kilometers of rippled mudflat in front of the sand.

About Cuxhaven and Duhnen

The camera sits high on the Strandhotel Duhnen at Duhner Strandstrasse 5 to 9, directly above the promenade. OrniTech LiveCam runs it for Kamp Hotels. A caption bar along the bottom of the picture names each preset (Neuwerk, NW Strand, Elbmuendung and Dorfplatz) together with the zoom level and the local time. Between presets the frame moves from the beach chairs and the paths along the dike, busy with walkers and cyclists on a dry afternoon, out to the flats, where a line of poles marks the low-tide route to Neuwerk. The Dorfplatz view faces the other way, over the rooftops and trees of Duhnen behind the seafront.

Cuxhaven sits on the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe and takes in the northernmost point of Lower Saxony. The town lies 2 meters (7 feet) above sea level and has about 49,500 residents. Cuxhaven belonged to Hamburg from the 13th century until the Greater Hamburg Act of 1937. Its emblem is the Kugelbake, a wooden beacon that once served as a lighthouse and marks the boundary between the river and the open sea. Duhnen, Doese and Sahlenburg are its seaside districts, and Cuxhaven has been a state-recognized seaside resort since 1964.

Neuwerk, the island on the horizon, is the last trace of the old Hamburg connection. Late summer and autumn bring most of the rain, about 91 mm (3.6 inches) in August and 84 mm (3.3 inches) in October, out of 824 mm (32.5 inches) a year. Autumn stays mild for a while, with October highs of 13.5 C (56 F). Haze can soften the horizon, so Neuwerk can shrink to a faint line even on a dry day, while a clear afternoon brings the island’s tower out sharply at full zoom.

Things to Do Near Cuxhaven

At low tide, horse-drawn Wattwagen carriages cross the mudflats from Cuxhaven to Neuwerk, following the line of poles and fording the Duhner Priel channel, and walkers make the same crossing on foot. In summer the ship MS Flipper sails to the island once a day at high tide from the Alte Liebe, a trip of about an hour and a half each way. On Neuwerk, the old tower can be climbed for a view across the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park.

Back on the mainland, the Kugelbake stands where the Elbe meets the sea, and the Alte Liebe, a former landing pier at the harbor, is the town’s classic spot for watching ships head up the river toward Hamburg. Grimmershoern Bay has a supervised swimming area in the sea itself, and Sahlenburg, the third seaside district, lies further along the coast. The Wadden Sea in front of the town is part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
