About this webcam

The Dornumersiel Webcam looks along the cutter harbor of a small sluice village on the East Frisian coast of Germany, where shrimp boats with tall booms and rigging lie moored against the quays. The basin runs north toward the dike and the Wadden Sea, with the quayside car park on the left, a cluster of harbor buildings and more cutters on the right, and a low red brick wall across the foreground. Beyond the harbor, the view opens onto a flat horizon of water and sky, and the sky often takes up half the frame. The scene follows the fishing day and the tides: cutters head out and come back, and the light shifts from winter gray to long summer evenings. A second tab switches to the village’s North Sea beach.

About Dornumersiel

Dornumersiel lies on the mainland coast of East Frisia, in the municipality of Dornum and the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony, directly south of the island of Langeoog. It is a small place, with 429 residents and an elevation of 1 meter (3 feet). The name ends in siel, the local word for a sluice in the dike: a structure with large gates that open at low tide to let rainwater drain off the marshes and close at high tide to hold the sea back. Local histories record that the St. Peter’s flood of 1651 destroyed the older sluice village of Altensiel, and that the new sluice villages of Dornumersiel and Westeraccumersiel were laid out in 1653. The two now form a single locality.

The harbor is one of the oldest on the East Frisian coast. For centuries it shipped farm produce from the surrounding marshes, and boats were built and repaired on its quays. Shrimp fishing came later, and shrimp was once dried here in coal-fired plants for use as animal feed. Today the basin serves both shrimp cutters and leisure boats, and cutters running in and out are a favorite subject for photographers. The old sluice house, the Captain’s House and the lifeboat station all stand in the village.

Tourism arrived in the middle of the 20th century, when industrial workers came looking for affordable holidays by the sea. Dornumersiel has been an official North Sea resort since 1990, and its sand beach covers about 70,000 square meters (17 acres) beside the dike. The tidal flats in front of it border the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.

Weather and Climate in Dornumersiel

The North Sea keeps the climate mild and damp, with few extremes. The weather station on the neighboring island of Norderney gives a good guide: its 1991 to 2020 averages put January highs near 4.6 C (40 F) and lows around 1.2 C (34 F). Spring warms slowly, with April highs of 11.5 C (53 F) and nights near 6 C (43 F). July brings highs of about 20.5 C (69 F) and nights around 15 C (59 F), and October still averages 13.4 C (56 F) by day and 9 C (48 F) at night, because the sea gives back the summer’s warmth. Rain totals about 747 millimeters (29.4 inches) a year, most of it in autumn and winter, with November the wettest month.

Light changes the camera more than temperature does. Norderney logs around 221 hours of sunshine in June and only 44 in December, and at this latitude a late June day lasts about 17 hours while a late December day lasts about 7.5. On a midsummer evening the harbor can stay lit until around 10 p.m., while winter brings low sun, gray skies and short afternoons. The coast has a long memory of storm floods, from the St. Peter’s flood of 1651 to the Christmas flood of 1717, which is why the dike stands between the village and the sea. On the beach tab, the rows of hooded wicker beach chairs were still out in early October.

Things to Do Near Dornumersiel

The Zwei-Siele-Museum tells the story of the two sluice villages from inside the Wiechers-Huus, a dike house built in 1696. Close by, the Nationalpark-Haus has explained the Wadden Sea since 1988, with exhibits on bird life, models of the beach and salt marsh, and seawater aquariums. Guided mudflat walks lead out across the seabed at low tide, kitesurfers use the beach, and a seawater open-air pool sits by the dike for anyone who wants to swim without watching the tide tables.

Dornum, about 4 kilometers (2.7 miles) southwest, packs a lot of history into a small town. The Norderburg is a moated castle that was enlarged between 1698 and 1707 into a Baroque palace in the Dutch style and now houses a school. The Beningaburg dates from 1375 to 1380 and is now a restaurant. Dornum’s post mill, built in 1626, is the oldest in East Frisia and the only one there still in full working order, and the town’s synagogue, the only one preserved in East Frisia, is now a memorial and a museum of Jewish culture. About 8 kilometers (5 miles) west, Nessmersiel is the port for Baltrum, served by the Reederei Baltrum-Linie, founded in 1928.

What can you see on the Dornumersiel Webcam?

What is the weather like in Dornumersiel?

Mild and maritime. Winter highs sit around 5 C (41 F), summer highs around 20 C (68 F), and rain falls through the year, most of it in autumn and winter, with November the wettest month.

What does siel mean in Dornumersiel?

A siel is a sluice in the dike. Its gates open at low tide to drain rainwater from the marshes and close at high tide to keep out the sea, and the harbor grew up around one.
