About this webcam
The Westerstede Airfield Webcam looks along the asphalt runway of Westerstede-Felde (EDWX), a small airfield set among the tree nurseries of the Ammerland in northwest Germany. The main camera stands beside the concrete apron, where a yellow taxi line curves across the foreground. Beyond it a parallel taxiway and the runway run off toward a hedge of clipped round shrubs and a dark wall of trees on the horizon. A second camera, on its own tab, watches the other landing direction from beside the hangars. Training flights and four-seat touring aircraft come and go in daylight, under the big skies of this flat country.
About Westerstede Airfield
Westerstede-Felde is a Sonderlandeplatz, the German category for a special-use airfield, about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of Westerstede town centre and just east of the A28 motorway. It sits only 9 meters (30 feet) above sea level, and its single asphalt runway is about 600 meters (1,970 feet) long. That suits light aircraft. The operator accepts aeroplanes up to 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds) and helicopters up to 3,000 kilograms (6,614 pounds), with gliders and ultralights by arrangement. The traffic circuit is flown south of the field at 244 meters (800 feet), every visiting pilot has to phone ahead for permission, and the published hours run from 0900 until sunset.
The captions burned into the two feeds read Landerichtung 06 and Landerichtung 24, German for landing direction, so there is one camera for each way the runway is used. The 24 camera looks over a wide lawn to the runway on the left and a block of blue and white hangars with a grey hangar in front of it on the right, with a model aircraft mounted on a pole in the foreground. Avgas is sold on the field, and there is hangar space for a single day or longer.
The airfield is more than a runway. The Fliegerclub Westerstede trains private pilots here, flying four-seat touring aircraft from the first lesson with instructors who are mostly experienced professional pilots. Schloss Kohlmoor, beside the field, has a hall for up to 130 guests whose veranda looks over a box hedge garden toward the runway. Westerstede itself had 23,956 residents at the end of 2025, spread over 179.55 square kilometers (69.32 square miles), and the district is known for nurseries that grow rhododendrons for Germany and for export.
Weather and Climate in Westerstede
Westerstede has a mild, damp climate shaped by the North Sea. Over the ten years from 2016 to 2025, January averaged highs of about 5 C (41 F) and lows of just 1 C (34 F). Spring builds slowly, with April highs near 13 C (56 F) and May near 17 C (63 F). July and August are the warmest months, with highs around 22 C (72 F) and nights near 14 C (57 F), and October still averages about 15 C (59 F) by day. Rain is spread across the year, about 850 millimeters (33.5 inches) in all, with July the wettest month at about 94 millimeters (3.7 inches) and May the driest.
Daylight swings widely at 53 degrees north: about 17 hours on the longest day and only about 7.5 hours at midwinter. Because flying stops at sunset, a June evening can bring aircraft onto the camera until close to 10 pm, while in December the field is usually quiet again by about 4 pm. In mid-October the grass between the runway and the taxiway was still bright green, while the trees behind the hangars had turned yellow and bronze.
Things to Do Near Westerstede Airfield
A skydiving club at the field runs tandem jumps, beginner courses and advanced training, and puts the cost of a full licence at roughly 1,100 euros or more, with at least 23 jumps needed before the exam. Club pilots also fly sightseeing trips over the Ammerland on a cost-sharing basis, and the airfield keeps a wildlife enclosure and an alpaca herd and rents out holiday apartments. Just east of the airfield in Linswege, the Rhododendronpark Hobbie covers 70 hectares (173 acres) and is the largest rhododendron park in Germany. It was founded in 1928, opens all year and charges admission from April to mid-June, when the blooms are out. Westerstede also hosts the Rhodo festival every four years, billed as the largest rhododendron show in Europe, with the next one due in 2027.
About 13 kilometers (8 miles) southeast, the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn sits on the Zwischenahner Meer. At 550 hectares (1,360 acres) it is the third largest lake in Lower Saxony, yet no more than 6 meters (20 feet) deep, and the boats of the White Fleet carry passengers across it. The city of Oldenburg is about 25 kilometers (16 miles) away, and the North Sea resort of Dangast on the Jade Bight lies about 22 kilometers (14 miles) northeast as the crow flies. Signposted cycle routes cross the flat Ammerland past nurseries and parks.
