About this webcam

The Bad Bruckenau Webcam looks down over the Schlosspark of the Staatsbad, the historic spa quarter in the Sinn valley about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) west of the town of Bad Bruckenau in northern Bavaria. Gravel walks and white benches run under rows of trees in the foreground. A white villa with a red mansard roof stands on the left, a yellow villa with grey shutters on the right, and a wooded hillside climbs behind both. The state-owned spa that runs the camera says the view reaches across the park toward its thermal bath and spring lounge. The scene turns with the seasons, from bare branches and frosty paths in winter to a full green canopy in summer and the copper and gold leaves of October.

About Bad Bruckenau

The spa dates to 1747, when Johann Burkard Schlereth, physician to Prince-Abbot Amand von Buseck of Fulda, discovered the healing springs here, and the first spa buildings were finished by 1749. The Schlosspark in the frame was first laid out in 1747 by Andrea Gallasini. In 1775 Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra had a former inn rebuilt as the Furstenhof, a summer residence for the rulers of Fulda, and in 1816 the spa passed to Bavaria.

That change brought its most famous guest. Crown Prince Ludwig first came for a summer stay in 1818, and as King Ludwig I of Bavaria he returned 26 times in all until 1862, lodging in the Furstenhof and running the business of government from there. He had the Bellevue built in 1819 to stand beside it, and laid the foundation stone of the neoclassical Kursaal on his birthday, 25 August 1827. Designed by Johann Gottfried Gutensohn with an arcaded walk along its front, the hall opened in July 1833 before the whole royal court. Leo von Klenze designed the Badhotel in 1823, the Elisabethenhof followed in 1894, and Max Littmann built the Parkhotel between 1899 and 1901. The spa itself credits Ludwig with shaping the romantic park seen on the Bad Bruckenau Webcam.

Five healing springs rise in the quarter today, among them the King Ludwig I spring, the Wernarzer spring, the Sinnberger spring and the Lola Montez spring. The Staatsbad lies in the western foothills of the Rhon, inside the Rhon Biosphere Reserve. The town of Bad Bruckenau, home to 6,415 people at the end of 2025, sits to the east and belongs to the Bad Kissingen district of Lower Franconia.

Weather and Climate in Bad Bruckenau

Winters in the Sinn valley are cold and damp. Averaged over 2015 to 2024, January brought highs of about 4 C (39 F) and lows near minus 1 C (30 F), and it was also the wettest month, with roughly 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain and snow. Frosty mornings carry on through February, when the bare trees open up the view of the villas and the slope behind them. Spring warms steadily, with April highs around 14 C (57 F), and by May the deciduous woods on the hillside are back in leaf.

Summer is mild rather than hot. July and August highs average about 24 C (75 F), with nights around 15 C (59 F). October, when the park turns copper and gold, averages highs of 14 C (57 F) and lows of 7 C (45 F). Rain is spread fairly evenly across the year, about 890 millimeters (35 inches) in total. At just over 50 degrees north, daylight lasts about 16 hours 25 minutes at midsummer but only about 8 hours in late December, so winter afternoons on the camera grow dark early.

Things to Do Near Bad Bruckenau

The spa quarter is small enough to see on foot. The chestnut avenue of the Schlosspark, the Wernarzer spring temple, the covered promenade, the herb garden and the old King Ludwig oak all lie within it, along with the arcaded Kursaal of 1833 and the Furstenhof where the king stayed. In the town itself, the old center keeps buildings from the 16th century, and the German Bicycle Museum, the Deutsches Fahrradmuseum, makes a good stop on a wet day.

The hills start at the edge of the park. The Extratour Konigsweg, a waymarked loop named for the king, begins at the Kurpark car park in the Staatsbad and covers 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) in about 2 hours 35 minutes. A longer walk from Bad Bruckenau climbs to the Dreistelz, often described as the southwesternmost summit of the Rhon, over about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) with 380 meters (1,247 feet) of ascent. Kloster Volkersberg, a 17th-century former Franciscan monastery with a baroque church, stands on the Volkersberg, reached through the village of Volkers, whose exit on the A7 motorway also serves the Staatsbad.
