The column was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of the Swedish occupation of Munich during the Thirty Years’ War. Today, the Mariensäule is a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. Surrounding the column are iconic buildings such as the Neues Rathaus and Frauenkirche. Marienplatz also offers shopping, dining, and a famous Christmas market.
