About this webcam
The Mountain Springs Lodge Webcam looks across the grounds of a family-run log lodge in Beaver Valley, just outside the small community of Plain on the eastern side of Washington’s Cascade Range. The lodge’s gabled log building fills the left of the frame, with flowers and red chairs by the entrance. A lawn runs past an orange picnic table, a flagpole and a raised stone planter to a reed-fringed pond dotted with water lilies on the right. Beyond the paved turning circle stand a smaller log outbuilding and a tall conifer, and a forested ridge closes off the view. In mid-October the reeds and the broadleaf trees around the grounds turn yellow and gold against the dark evergreens, and on clear days the midday sun flares across the upper right corner of the picture.
About Mountain Springs Lodge
Mountain Springs Lodge stands on Chiwawa Loop Road at the south end of Beaver Valley, about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) northeast of the center of Plain in Chelan County. An elevation model puts the lodge grounds at about 580 meters (1,900 feet), a little above the 570 meters (1,870 feet) recorded for Plain itself. Beaver Creek drains the valley, and the Chumstick Highway, once State Route 209, links Plain with Leavenworth. The lodge gives the drive from downtown Leavenworth as 25 to 40 minutes depending on the weather. In a straight line, the town lies about 19 kilometers (12 miles) to the south.
The property’s story starts on July 4, 1895, when W. W. Burgess, who had come west from Iowa in 1888, bought the land for $1,000. It has stayed in the same family for six generations, and Mountain Springs Lodge and Conference Center opened on it in 1990. Today the lodge can host nearly 200 people, some rooms have kitchenettes, and there is a dining area for groups. The community of Plain had a post office of its own from 1913 until 1936.
Weather and Climate at Mountain Springs Lodge
Climate normals for Plain, measured from 1991 to 2020, describe a valley with proper winters. January averages a high of about 1 C (34 F) and a low of about -6 C (21 F), cold enough to hold the snow that the lodge’s sleigh rides, snowmobile tours and the nearby groomed ski trails depend on. By April, afternoons reach about 14 C (57 F), but nights still sit close to freezing at around 0 C (32 F), so frost can linger well into the season.
July is the warmest month, with average highs near 28 C (82 F) and nights that drop to about 10 C (50 F), so summer evenings by the water stay cool. October brings highs of about 14 C (58 F) and near-freezing nights around 1 C (33 F). That is when this camera is at its most colorful, with gold reeds, yellow leaves and dark conifers on the ridge all in one frame. Plain averages 691 millimeters (27.2 inches) of precipitation a year.
