About this webcam

The Estes Park Webcam looks out from Windcliff, a community of mountain homes on the slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain just south of town, toward the high peaks of the Colorado Rockies. The main camera sits behind the windows of a rental home called Awestruck. Tall pines and a stand of aspens fill the foreground, boulders sit among the trees, and a rocky ridge on the left leads the eye to a row of summits on the skyline. Four more cameras from the same operator wait in the tabs: a north-facing view named for Ypsilon Mountain, the deck of a home called Tranquil, and two views from the Windcliff gatehouse. The summits change most with the seasons. At midday in mid-October they carried fresh snow, and the aspens in frame had turned yellow.

About Estes Park and Windcliff

Windcliff Vacation Homes runs the cameras from its office at 2220 Windcliff Drive, the gatehouse where guests collect their check-in packets. The community holds about 160 properties, roughly 50 of them available as short-term rentals. The USGS elevation model puts the office at about 2,430 meters (7,970 feet), some 135 meters (440 feet) higher than downtown Estes Park, which sits near 2,295 meters (7,530 feet). In a straight line Windcliff is about 5.5 kilometers (3.5 miles) southwest of downtown. Above the homes, Ram’s Horn Mountain rises to 2,912 meters (9,553 feet) in Roosevelt National Forest, just outside Rocky Mountain National Park.

The town takes its name from Joel Estes, a Missouri native who founded the community in 1859, and it was incorporated on April 17, 1917. The 2020 census counted 5,904 residents. The Big Thompson River runs through town, and Olympus Dam created Lake Estes in 1949. The Stanley Hotel, the town’s famous historic hotel, was built in 1909 by Freelan Oscar Stanley.

Each tab of the Estes Park Webcam shows a different side of Windcliff. The camera labeled Ypsilon (North) faces north, with snowy summits low on the left horizon and a rocky, forested ridge on the right. It is named for Ypsilon Mountain, a 4,121 meter (13,520 foot) peak in the Mummy Range, named in 1887 by Mrs. Frederick H. Chapin after the Y-shaped snowfield on its east face. The Tranquil camera looks from a deck high on Ram’s Horn Mountain across a snowy ridge, with a cabin roof in the lower corner. The West-Facing and Gatehouse cameras look over the parking area outside the office, where arrivals pull in, with a flag on the deck, a lodge-style building across the lot and distant peaks beyond the trees.

Weather and Climate in Estes Park

Winters are cold. At the weather station about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south-southeast of town, January averages about 3 C (37 F) by day and falls to about minus 9 C (16 F) at night. Snow can sit on the pines and summits for long spells, and most of Trail Ridge Road through the national park closes for the winter because of heavy snow. Summer is short and mild. July averages about 27 C (80 F) in the afternoon and only about 9 C (48 F) overnight, so the morning view is often crisp even in midsummer.

The shoulder seasons swing hard. Climate data for the Windcliff site averages only about 7 C (45 F) by day in April, with nights near minus 6 C (22 F), so snow on the peaks can linger well into spring. October averages about 12 C (53 F) by day and just below freezing at night, so frost is common at dawn. Autumn is the season to watch the trees: the aspens on the Awestruck camera show gold among the dark pines, and the fall elk rut draws crowds into the national park. Because the cameras sit well above downtown, they usually read a little cooler than the town itself.

Things to Do Near Estes Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is the main draw. It was established on January 26, 1915, and drew 4.1 million recreational visitors in 2023. Windcliff says the Beaver Meadows Entrance is a 10 to 15 minute drive, and homes on the south end of the community can walk into the park. Trail Ridge Road climbs to 3,713 meters (12,183 feet), and Longs Peak is the park’s highest summit at 4,346 meters (14,259 feet). In autumn, the elk rut brings crowds of visitors into the park.

Closer to the cameras, private trailheads in the neighborhood lead to the Aspenbrook Trail and Lily Lake, and hikes to the summits of Ram’s Horn Mountain and Lily Mountain start from Windcliff properties. Downtown is a 5 to 10 minute drive away. There you can tour the Stanley Hotel, walk along the Big Thompson River, or circle Lake Estes below Olympus Dam.
