The Winter Park Webcam looks over the base village of Winter Park Resort in Grand County, Colorado, from a camera on top of West Portal Station. Timber lodges with green roofs fill the foreground, the gondola terminal sits at the bottom right, and forested slopes cut with ski runs climb away behind the buildings toward bare summits. The view swings hard with the seasons. In early October the runs are bare and brown under grey cloud while the aspens around the village plaza turn gold, and by midwinter the same slopes can be white from top to bottom.

About Winter Park

Winter Park Resort opened for the 1939-40 season and is still owned by the City and County of Denver, with Alterra Mountain Company running it. The base sits at 2,743 meters (9,000 feet) and the summit at 3,676 meters (12,060 feet), a vertical drop of 933 meters (3,060 feet) spread over 3,081 acres (12.5 square kilometers) of skiable terrain. That terrain is split into seven territories, among them Winter Park, Mary Jane, Vasquez Ridge, Parsenn Bowl and the Vasquez Cirque, served by 23 lifts and 167 trails. The Gondola, installed in 2018, leaves from the terminal in the corner of the Base Cam frame.

The base area has an unusual front door. The west portal of the Moffat Tunnel opens at the foot of the resort, and West Portal Station, the building the Base Cam is mounted on, carries the same name. The rail tunnel runs 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), opened on 26 February 1928 and climbs to 2,816 meters (9,239 feet) at its apex. Amtrak’s Winter Park Express, the ski train revived in 2017, uses it to bring skiers straight to the slopes. The town of Winter Park itself, incorporated on September 1, 1979, had 1,033 residents at the 2020 census and sits on U.S. Route 40, 106 kilometers (66 miles) from Denver by way of Berthoud Pass, with Fraser on its northern edge.

The Lunch Rock camera is on top of Lunch Rock Lodge on Mary Jane and faces Parry Peak and the bare ridge above the treeline, with the Sunnyside Express lift and the trails around it. The Tubing Hill camera watches the tubing lanes under the Village Cabriolet, with Mary Jane in the background, and the Snow Stake camera is trained on a red measuring board marked in inches up to 18 (46 centimeters).

Weather and Climate in Winter Park

Winter Park is cold for most of the year. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the town’s weather station put January at a mean high of -1.2 C (29.8 F) and a mean low of -14.1 C (6.7 F), and the same station averages 544 centimeters (214 inches) of snow a year. On the Base Cam that can mean heavy snow on the lodge roofs from late fall into spring, with the cut runs on the slopes behind turning into white bands between the trees. April is still winter at this height, with highs of 8.4 C (47.1 F) and lows of -6.8 C (19.8 F), and the runs on the Snoasis and Lunch Rock tabs can still be fully white.

Summer is short and mild. July averages 22.8 C (73.1 F) by day but only 5.0 C (41.0 F) at night, so evenings at the base stay cool even in midsummer. October sits in between, with highs of 10.9 C (51.7 F) and lows of -3.9 C (25.0 F), and it is the month when the cameras change over. The frames checked in early October 2026 showed bare grass on every run, gold aspens around the village and nothing at all on the snow stake.

Things to Do Near Winter Park

In winter the Tubing Hill is the easy option for anyone who does not ski, and riders on the Winter Park Express step off the train at the station in the base village the Base Cam looks over. In summer the slopes turn into Trestle Bike Park, one of two lift-access bike parks in Winter Park, and the Arrow chairlift serves Colorado’s longest alpine slide. The resort adds an alpine fairy trail, a disc golf course, an 18-hole putting course and the Chickadee ropes course for kids.

Rocky Mountain National Park is 60 kilometers (37 miles) away along Highway 40. Closer in, the Cozens Ranch Museum tells the story of pioneer life in the Fraser Valley in a former working ranch that was once a stagecoach stop, and the Fraser River and the creeks around it are fished both with guides and on your own.
