The Holyoke Colorado Webcam looks up South Interocean Avenue, the main street of Holyoke, a small county seat on the plains of northeastern Colorado. The camera, labeled as the Holyoke Post Office cam, sits above the left-hand sidewalk, where pickups nose into angled parking beside the vertical sign of the Peerless Theatre. The street runs away past low storefronts toward a grain elevator at the far end, and on the right the trees and lawn of the Phillips County Courthouse fill half the frame. Trucks pull in and out all day, the flags at the top left show which way the wind is blowing across the plains, and the courthouse trees go from summer green to autumn gold and then bare branches over winter snow.
Holyoke is the county seat of Phillips County and its largest town, with 2,346 residents at the 2020 census. It stands at about 1,140 meters (3,740 feet) above sea level. The Burlington Railroad laid it out on a grid in 1887 as a division point on Frenchman Creek, and the railroad’s general superintendent named it for his son-in-law, Edward A. Holyoke. The town was incorporated on May 31, 1888. U.S. Route 6, U.S. Route 385 and Colorado State Highway 23 all pass through, and grain elevators like the one at the end of the street on camera are still the tallest structures in town.
The Peerless Theatre, whose sign hangs at the left edge of the view, stands at 212 South Interocean Avenue, and the Phillips County Courthouse faces it across the street behind its wide lawn. Two buildings in Holyoke are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Heginbotham Library and the Burge Hotel, built in 1912 at 230 North Interocean Avenue, on the north end of the same avenue.
Holyoke lies about 278 kilometers (173 miles) from Denver, roughly two and a half hours by car from Denver International Airport, and close to the Nebraska line. Julesburg is about 48 kilometers (30 miles) away.
Holyoke’s weather swings hard between day and night. Under the 1991 to 2020 normals, January afternoons average 5°C (42°F) but nights drop to -11°C (13°F), while July runs from 15°C (59°F) at dawn to 31°C (88°F) in the afternoon. April averages -1°C to 17°C (31°F to 62°F) and October 1°C to 18°C (33°F to 65°F). In every season the daily range is about 16°C to 18°C (29°F to 32°F).
The town gets about 456 millimeters (17.9 inches) of precipitation and 76 centimeters (30.4 inches) of snow in an average year. On the Holyoke Colorado Webcam that can mean snow on the courthouse lawn in winter, green trees through the summer, and the gold of the courthouse trees in autumn, as on the early November frame taken for this post. The sky takes up the top third of the view, so a passing front is easy to watch roll in.
The Heginbotham Library, the town’s public library, was built between 1917 and 1921, largely through the efforts of local women, in the Craftsman style, and it is open every day except Sunday. The Phillips County Museum covers local history including the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Entry is free, and it has opened on Wednesday afternoons and by appointment on weekends. The Peerless Theatre on camera is the town’s cinema.
Holyoke Golf Club dates from 1923, and the country around town is known for pheasant hunting in season. For food, Happy Jacks Barbecue was started in 1999 by two Texas transplants and is known for brisket and pulled pork, and the Drylander Bar and Grill keeps 10 beers on tap. A short drive north, the Fort Sedgwick Museum in Julesburg covers Old West and military history.
