Telluride Webcam – Main Street and the New Sheridan Hotel

The Telluride Webcam looks out over Colorado Avenue, the main street of Telluride in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, from a building on the south side of the road. It is a moving camera that cycles through a handful of set views: the brick front of the New Sheridan Hotel, the clock tower of the San Miguel County Courthouse, and a long look east along the avenue to the peaks that close off the head of the canyon. Pickups, small buses and people on foot pass below, and the steep canyon wall behind the rooftops turns gold when the aspens change in autumn. Snow, low cloud and rain change the picture by the hour, and on a wet day drops on the lens can blur part of the frame.

About Telluride and Colorado Avenue

Telluride sits in a box canyon on the San Miguel River at about 2,668 meters (8,754 feet), and counted 2,607 residents at the 2020 census. The town began in 1878 as a mining camp called Columbia and took the name Telluride after it was incorporated in 1887. The mines in the basins above worked ores of silver, lead, zinc, copper and gold, and the Rio Grande Southern railroad reached town in 1891. Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1961, and many of the brick buildings from the mining boom still line the avenue.

The red brick building with green awnings that fills many frames is the New Sheridan Hotel. The first Sheridan, Telluride’s first hotel, was built in 1891, burned in 1894 and was rebuilt in brick in 1895. Its Sheridan Bar dates from the same year and still serves drinks across the original hand-carved cherry wood bar, imported from Austria. William Jennings Bryan spoke in front of the hotel at the town’s Fourth of July celebration in 1903, and in 1914 a flood down Cornet Creek filled the bar with mud halfway to the ceiling. The Sheridan Opera House was added next to the hotel in 1913, first as the Segerberg Opera House.

West of the hotel, behind a small lawn with benches, the San Miguel County Courthouse carries the date 1887 on its facade. The first courthouse went up on the south side of the avenue in 1886 and burned soon after, and its bricks were saved for the present building, which is still in use. Along the same avenue, the San Miguel Valley Bank was robbed in June 1889, by most accounts Butch Cassidy’s first bank robbery, with about $24,580 taken. The old bank later burned, and the Mahr Building replaced it in 1892.

Weather and Climate in Telluride

Winters are long and cold. At the NOAA station 4 miles (6 kilometers) west-northwest of town, January averages a high of 2°C (36°F) and a low of -18°C (0°F), and about 331 centimeters (131 inches) of snow falls in an average year, most of it from November through March. On camera, winter means white roofs and a white canyon wall. Spring comes slowly: April still averages a low of -6°C (22°F), and May brings around 13 centimeters (5 inches) of snow.

Summer is short and mild, with July highs around 25°C (77°F) and nights near 5°C (41°F). July, August and September are the wettest months, with 59 to 66 millimeters (2.3 to 2.6 inches) of rain each, while June is the driest at 22 millimeters (0.85 inches). October averages 14°C (57°F) by day and -5°C (23°F) at night. On October 22, 2026, the camera showed fresh snow on the peaks at the head of the canyon and yellow aspens on the slopes, while rain fell on the street below.

Things to Do Near Telluride

The free gondola is the easiest way out of the canyon. It links Telluride with Mountain Village in about 13 minutes and climbs to San Sophia station at 3,210 meters (10,540 feet) on the way. Telluride Ski Resort put in its first lift in 1972. Back in town, the Telluride Historical Museum occupies Hall’s Hospital, built in 1896, which treated miners and townspeople until 1964 and reopened as the museum in 1966.

A self-guided historic walking tour starts on Colorado Avenue near the courthouse and passes the New Sheridan, the Butch Cassidy robbery site and the old Rio Grande Southern depot, then loops through Popcorn Alley, the old sporting district on Pacific Street. At the east end of town, Lone Tree Cemetery holds graves from the mining boom, and the Idarado Legacy Trail follows plaques on the canyon’s mining history to the Pandora Mill site, which looks out on Bridal Veil Falls. The Telluride Film Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival have both run since 1974.
