About this webcam

The Fort Morgan Colorado Webcam looks across a signal-controlled intersection in downtown Fort Morgan, the county seat of Morgan County on the plains of northeastern Colorado. The far corner is filled by a two-story building painted with a sky-blue mural that reads “Welcome to Fort Morgan, CO” beneath the words “Oasis on the Plains”, with a horse and rider, a windmill and a band of yellow flowers. To its right, a street lined with brick storefronts, shade trees and angle-parked cars runs away from the junction, while the near side of the picture is a broad paved parking area. A second camera, on the Glenn Miller Park tab, watches the lawn and red-roofed gazebo of the town’s central park. Pickups, delivery vans and the changing light on the facades keep the scene moving through the day.

About Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan sits at 1,316 meters (4,318 feet) near the South Platte River and counted 11,597 residents at the 2020 census. The name goes back to a military post set up in 1865 as Camp Wardwell and renamed in 1866 for Colonel Christopher A. Morgan. Its soldiers protected stagecoaches and travelers on the Overland Trail, which crossed this stretch of prairie. The post was dismantled once that threat had passed, but the name stayed, and the town was platted on May 1, 1884, and incorporated on June 15, 1887. Interstate 76 now runs past the town, and Denver International Airport lies about 122 kilometers (76 miles) to the southwest.

The best-known former resident is Glenn Miller. The big band leader graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1921 and formed his first band, the Mick-Miller Five, here. Glenn Miller Park carries his name and works as the town’s main gathering place, in the block between Main Street and State Street, with the Fort Morgan Public Library on its north side. That is the lawn, gazebo and tall pine you see on the second camera, with parked cars along the street beyond.

Downtown had a makeover for the second season of HGTV’s Home Town Takeover. Several new murals went up on exterior walls around town, a number of Main Street businesses got brightly colored fronts and new signs, and a new display was added in Glenn Miller Park.
