About this webcam

The Neustadt in Holstein Webcam watches the inner harbor of this Baltic town in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, from the Haus der Manufakturen on the harbor’s west side. A fenced building site fills the foreground, a quayside path runs along the water, and across the basin small boats lie moored against the far quay in front of red-roofed houses and a church spire. The local newspaper der reporter set the camera up on 21 June 2021 to follow the demolition and rebuilding of the old commercial waterfront, and it has filmed the same stretch ever since. Stacked materials, site vehicles and new foundations shift from week to week, while the water changes with the light, from flat gray winter days to clear summer evenings.

About Neustadt in Holstein

Neustadt in Holstein sits at an elevation of 16 meters (52 feet) on the Bay of Lubeck, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Lubeck, and had 15,962 residents at the end of 2025. Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg founded the town around 1239, and it received Lubeck law in 1244. The Stadtkirche, a Brick Gothic church, dates from that same year, and the medieval Kremper Tor gate survives from the old town fortifications. Northwest of the center lies the Binnenwasser, a brackish lake and nature reserve, with the Pagodenspeicher, a grain warehouse built in 1830, on its shore. The town is also a base for the German Federal Police’s maritime unit.

The camera exists because of the Hafenwestseite, the commercially used west bank of the harbor that the town is turning into a new district. The plans divide it into four quarters, called Hospitalquartier, Hafenspange, Speicherquartier and Sudspitze, with homes above ground-floor shops and restaurants, a promenade along the water, a large harbor square for events and an improved crossing over the harbor. The old storage towers are being converted into a hostel, a Welcome Center is planned beside the railway station, and the work is scheduled to finish in 2027. The day after this camera went up, demolition crews started on a 54 meter (177 foot) tower with a 3 tonne (6,600 pound) wrecking ball.

Weather and Climate in Neustadt in Holstein

The Baltic keeps Neustadt mild and damp rather than extreme. Over the past decade, July and August highs have averaged 21 to 22 C (71 to 72 F), with nights around 15 C (59 F). January is the coldest month, with highs near 5 C (41 F) and lows just above freezing at about 1 C (34 F). Spring warms slowly while the sea is still cold, from highs of 8 C (47 F) in March to 16 C (61 F) in May. Autumn holds on to some warmth, with September highs near 19 C (66 F) and October near 14 C (57 F). Rain falls in every month, and July is the wettest on average at around 82 millimeters (3.2 inches).

Daylight swings widely at this latitude. Around the June solstice the sun is up for close to 17 hours, so the harbor stays light well into the evening, while in late December daylight shrinks to a little over 7 hours and the picture turns dark by late afternoon. Summer is when the far quay typically fills with pleasure boats. In winter the basin is quieter, and low cloud over the bay often flattens the colors to grays and browns.

Things to Do Near Neustadt in Holstein

The town center is under a kilometer from the harbor. The Kremper Tor houses the zeiTTor museum, which traces 7,000 years of local history through archaeological finds. The Cap Arcona Museum opened on 3 May 1990, the 45th anniversary of the attack on the prisoner ships in the bay, and tells the story with original parts of the ships, maps and photographs. The Cap Arcona honor cemetery in the town is a quieter place to remember the victims. A walk through the center can take in the Stadtkirche and end at the Pagodenspeicher on the Binnenwasser.

For the open Baltic, Pelzerhaken lies about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of the harbor. Its south-facing sandy beach is often called the South Beach of the Baltic, and schools there teach sailing, surfing, kiting and stand-up paddling. A 7.9 kilometer (4.9 mile) loop from Pelzerhaken follows the shore past the lighthouse, whose current tower dates from 1936 and 1937. The tower is closed to visitors, but its base is visible from the beach promenade. Rettin, east of Pelzerhaken beyond the Rettiner Wiesen meadows, adds more beach and campsites, and Hansa-Park, a seasonal amusement park in Sierksdorf, is about 18 minutes away on bus line 550 from Neustadt’s bus and rail station.
