About this webcam

The Neuville Marina Webcam looks over the boat basin of Neuville, a village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of downtown Quebec City. A strip of lawn with picnic tables fills the foreground, a gangway drops to a service pontoon, and rows of floating docks reach out toward a curving rock breakwater. Beyond it the river opens wide, with the low south shore along the horizon. The stream comes from the marina’s own YouTube channel, and the picture follows the boating year. Summer can bring busy slips and sailboat masts, while by mid-October most of the docks sit empty. The light on the water shifts through the day, and ships bound for Montreal can appear far out on the river.

About Neuville Marina

The marina, Marina de Neuville in French, sits at the foot of Rue du Quai, which leads down to the village quay. Two rock breakwaters wrap around the basin and shelter it from the open river, and the camera looks across the docks toward them. A tall white mast stands at the water’s edge on the left of the frame, and bicycles and wheeled dock carts wait on the gravel beside the gangway. Neuville belongs to the Portneuf Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region. It had 4,475 residents at the 2021 census, spread over 71.92 square kilometers (27.77 square miles) of land.

Neuville is one of the oldest parishes in Canada. The land was granted as a seigneury in 1653 to Jean Bourdon for his son, Jean-Francois Bourdon de Dombourg, and in 1680 it passed to Nicolas Dupont de Neuville, whose name the village still carries. The first settlers arrived in 1665 and the civil parish was founded in 1684. The village climbs three levels of marine terraces above the river, shaped as the glaciers melted. For a long time Neuville was known for supplying limestone to many buildings and sites in Quebec, and for its shipyard. Hotels and summer resorts followed in the 20th century.

The other thing Neuville is famous for is sweet corn. The village is nicknamed the sweet corn capital of Quebec, and Neuville Sweet Corn is a protected geographical indication reserved for corn grown and harvested here. Sandy soil with limestone in it, and fields on a south-facing slope above the river, are what suit the crop to this spot. Neuville also lies on the Chemin du Roy, the road opened in the 1730s as the first link between Quebec City and Montreal, which survives today as Route 138.

June runs around 22 C (72 F) by day. Spring arrives late and then moves quickly: April afternoons average about 7 C (45 F), while May climbs to 18 C (64 F). In the coldest weeks shore ice can build along the rocks and breakwaters, and snow can cover the lawn in the foreground. Things to Do Near Neuville Marina

The Casse-Croute de Neuville, a canteen and dairy bar with a children’s playground, looks out over the river. Up the hill, Rue des Erables holds about two dozen historic buildings in a mix of styles, and guided tours open some of the old homes to visitors. The Saint-Francois-de-Sales church, built in 1854, holds 26 paintings by Antoine Plamondon, a painter who also served as mayor of the village. The Larue seigneurial manor, built in 1835, stands on a small rolling hill.

For time outdoors, the Marais Leon-Provancher Nature Reserve protects 125 hectares (309 acres) on the river, with a trail network and a pond known for birding. Domaine des 3 Moulins pairs a vineyard making white, red, rose and fortified wines with the ruins of three 19th-century mills: a grain mill, a sawmill and a carding mill. In season, the farm stand at Ferme Langlois et Fils, known as Chez Mede, sells the village’s sweet corn along with other vegetables, fruit and preserves, and the family counts 12 generations of farming here. Quebec City is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) east along Route 138.
