Rock Isle Lake Webcam – Alpine Lake on the Great Divide

The Rock Isle Lake Webcam looks down on a small alpine lake in Sunshine Meadows, high on the Continental Divide above Banff Sunshine Village in the Canadian Rockies. The lake fills the left of the frame, with the little wooded island that gives it its name sitting out on the water. A second lake lies lower in the valley beyond, and a long line of peaks runs across the horizon. Spruce and larch crowd the foreground, and their color is the quickest way to read the season: green through summer, yellow once the larches turn in autumn, then white for most of the year when snow buries the meadows. Cloud builds and drifts over the range through the day, so the light on the peaks can change from one hour to the next.

About Rock Isle Lake

Rock Isle Lake sits at about 2,280 meters (7,480 feet) in Sunshine Meadows, a sweep of alpine meadow at roughly 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) that spans both sides of the Continental Divide. Here the divide is also the border between Alberta and British Columbia. Sunshine Village is on the Alberta side, in Banff National Park, while the lake sits just across the line in British Columbia, inside Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. That park was set aside on February 6, 1922 and now covers 39,050 hectares (about 96,500 acres). Its namesake, Mount Assiniboine, rises to 3,618 meters (11,870 feet) and is the highest peak in the region.

The Sunshine gondola climbs from a base at 1,659 meters (5,443 feet) to the village terminal at 2,159 meters (7,083 feet), and in summer the Standish Chairlift carries visitors on to 2,385 meters (7,825 feet) in about eight minutes. From the Standish Viewing Deck at the top, Rock Isle, Grizzly and Larix lakes all lie below. Skiing brought people to this corner of the Rockies long before the sightseeing lifts did. Cliff White and Cyril Paris first skied the area in March 1929, and Jim and Pat Brewster began offering ski vacations here in 1934. The first gondola opened in 1980. Today Banff Sunshine covers 13.6 square kilometers (3,360 acres) across three mountains, about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the town of Banff.

Weather and Climate at Rock Isle Lake

Winter is long at this height. Snow typically covers Sunshine Meadows from October until mid-June, around eight months of the year, and the ski area receives about 914 centimeters (360 inches) of snow annually. The ski season usually runs from early November to late May. Through those months the lake freezes and vanishes under snow, and the camera shows a white basin ringed by snow-loaded trees, with the peaks beyond often hidden when storms move through.

Summer is short and changeable. Temperatures can fall below freezing in any month, and in July and August they can swing from as warm as 30 C (86 F) down to freezing. Wildflowers fill the meadows in June and July, when the lake is open and the island’s trees stand out against the water. By September the alpine larches turn yellow and red, and the highest peaks can already carry fresh snow while the meadows below are still bare.

Things to Do Near Rock Isle Lake

The main summer outing is the Sunshine Meadows loop, a 7.6 kilometer (4.7 mile) walk with about 175 meters (574 feet) of climbing that links Rock Isle, Grizzly and Larix lakes. The Rock Isle Lake junction is roughly 1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) from the Standish lift, so a short out-and-back to the lake works for anyone pressed for time. The hiking season runs from June to early October, with wildflowers early and larches late. Bighorn sheep, and elk at a distance, turn up in the meadows along with plenty of squirrels. In 2026 the sightseeing gondola ran daily from July 6 to September 20, from 8 am to 6 pm. Hikers who skip the gondola can walk the access road instead, which adds about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) each way.

From early November the same slopes belong to skiers and snowboarders. Banff Sunshine spreads across three mountains, including Lookout Mountain and Goat’s Eye Mountain, with 137 named trails served by a gondola, seven high-speed chairlifts and two fixed quads. The town of Banff lies about 15 kilometers (9 miles) to the northeast.
