Abetone Val di Luce Webcam – Chairlifts and Apennine Ridges

The Abetone Val di Luce Webcam looks out from Rifugio Le Terrazze, a mountain refuge 1,650 meters (5,413 feet) up in Val di Luce, one of the ski valleys of Abetone in the Tuscan Apennines. A chairlift station with a raised timber deck stands in the left foreground, and a second chairlift crosses the right half of the frame on grey pylons. Behind, a ski run cuts straight down the forested slope on the left, and above the beech trees the mountain opens into grassy slopes and bands of layered rock, with a small building on the summit. In early October the beech woods turn copper and the upper slopes show patches of deep red.

About Val di Luce

Val di Luce lies in the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano, in the province of Pistoia, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) southwest of the Abetone pass in a straight line. The valley is roughly 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and drops 913 meters (2,995 feet), from Alpe Tre Potenze at 1,940 meters (6,365 feet) to 1,027 meters (3,369 feet), where the Rio delle Pozze joins the Scoltenna. The ridge along its western side is the regional border with Emilia-Romagna, yet the valley drains north, and its water reaches the Po and the Adriatic instead of flowing toward the Tyrrhenian coast like most of the region.

Skiing came to the valley in the 1960s, and by 2025 Val di Luce had six lifts of its own. It is one sector of the wider Abetone ski area, which has about 50 kilometers (31 miles) of runs. Rifugio Le Terrazze is a stone-built refuge with a restaurant, a self-service bar and two sun terraces, and skiers reach it on the Passo d’Annibale chairlift. Weather and Climate in Val di Luce

At 1,650 meters, winter is long and cold. From December to February, daytime highs average only 1 to 2.5 C (34 to 36 F), and nights drop to between -4 and -5.5 C (22 to 25 F). Average nights stay below freezing from November right through April, so much of the winter precipitation falls as snow. April highs reach about 8 C (46 F), and May warms to 11 C (52 F) but is one of the wetter months.

Summer is short and mild. July and August highs average about 20 C (68 F), with nights near 11 C (52 F), and July is the driest month, with about 42 millimeters (1.7 inches) of rain. Autumn cools fast, from 14.5 C (58 F) in September to 5 C (41 F) in November, and October to December are the three wettest months, each with close to 200 millimeters (8 inches). Cloud can then sit right down on the ridge, and the first snow can whiten the run on the left before the lifts open.

Things to Do Near Val di Luce

In winter the lifts in the frame belong to the Abetone ski area, whose sectors include Val di Luce, Passo d’Annibale and Monte Gomito, which rises to 1,892 meters (6,207 feet). Rifugio Le Terrazze serves warm mountain dishes such as polenta to skiers, and Rifugio Le Rocce sits at the end of the Celina Seghi run.

Out of the ski season the valley is walking country. Lago Nero, a glacial lake of about 8 hectares (20 acres) at 1,730 meters (5,676 feet), is the best known goal, and Lago Piatto also lies in the valley. One route follows trails CAI 100 and 104 from the car park of the Orto Botanico Forestale dell’Abetone, past the Capanna dei Pastori refuge to Lago Nero, then up to Passo d’Annibale at 1,794 meters (5,886 feet). The garden itself, at Fontana Vaccaia, opened in 1987, covers 1.4 hectares (3.5 acres) and holds about 300 plant species native to the northern Apennines, from bilberry, gentian and saxifrage to orchids, fir and beech.

Abetone village, on the pass at 1,388 meters (4,554 feet), has two stone pyramids that mark the old border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena, beside the road over the pass that opened in 1781. Libro Aperto, at 1,937 meters (6,355 feet), and Alpe Tre Potenze are the high summits above the resort.
