Black Stork Nest, Ogre, Latvia

Live webcam from the black stork nest in Ogre, Latvia. This nesting site has been documented in this area since at least 2003, but this specific nest was only discovered in January 2021. It is believed to have been built around 2010 after the previous nest was abandoned.

The black stork (Ciconia nigra) is a large, striking bird known for its glossy black plumage with a greenish sheen, contrasting sharply with its white underbelly. Unlike its more social relative, the white stork, the black stork is highly reclusive, preferring dense forests near rivers, lakes, and wetlands for nesting and foraging. These migratory birds breed across Europe and Asia, including Latvia, before traveling to Africa for the winter. Black storks primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and insects, using their long, slender beaks to hunt in shallow waters.

Ogre, Latvia, experiences a temperate continental climate with distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, while summers are mild to warm, averaging around 20°C (68°F). Spring and autumn bring moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall, creating ideal conditions for the region’s lush forests and diverse wildlife. The area’s climate provides a suitable environment for black storks, as they prefer quiet, wooded areas near water sources for nesting and foraging.
